Forums - Nintendo - Do you feel Shokio is on something with Splatoon?

It's so Nintendo and so non-Nintendo at the same time, which is what I love about it. Its charm and personality absolutely screams Nintendo, but the huge focus on online is definitely something that might not have been a major point of discussion if it wasn't the younger team working on it.

I think that Nintendo's game consistently tend to be high quality, and their "old guard" have been responsible for most of that. They've created some of the best games and best franchises in all of video gaming, over the last many decades. I would love to see Miyamoto do what he said, and work on smaller, more "intimate" projects, totally new ideas, completely unrelated to any of the established franchises.

Having said that, younger devs stepping up, and bringing fresh things to the table, is good too. You need a fine mix of both: established franchises, and fresh ideas.

I don't know if its truly the case, but the more I think about, this game truly look like something Miyamoto, Anuoma would never aim for.

In other words, say hello to Nintendo future devs, good luck guys :)

I think so, that game actually gives me a bit of a Ubisoft vibe for some reason, like the funky characters make me think a bit Rabbids, mixed with an arena shooter.

Although Miyamoto basically said Splatoon was more of a side project, handled by the younger blood after hours at Nintendo, so I think this may not be a huge budget product, maybe the younger blood will be given the go ahead for something even bigger if this is a success.

Will it be a success is another question? I personally think so.

I've been saying for a long time that Nintendo needs to start to deliver these not so hardcore, midway between casual and hardcore games. This game looks like it has a lot of depth, but will be very accessible for anyone new to the franchise, that just wants to jump in and play a few rounds. Having the whole aspect of needing to paint the environment, as well as attack and defense against opponents is a nice new way to handle a shooter genre.

The art style looks very pretty too, I'm very much looking forward to this and I won't be shocked if this game moves a decent amount of Wii U's when it launches.

I agree with him. By the way, I didn't think that anyone here knew who Shokio is, I immediately thought that he would regarded as a Nintendo hater cuz' of his heavy criticisms. lol

Remember Shokio from waaaay back, I first started following his stuff in '09.

Yeah back in the day he was a big promoter of "hardcore" third party Wii games like Dead Space Extraction, The Conduit, etc, trying to raise awareness of them.

I don't like this guy...I've watched a bunch of his videos and I've always found him to be more annoying than anything

All I know is, Splatoon is the most interesting thing Nintendo has done since Wii Sports nearly a decade ago.

It looks like something 90's Sega would do honestly
