Tekken Tag 2, Darksiders 2, Ninja Gaiden 3 were all games that didn't even sell very well on PS360, consoles with 80m+ install bases. Mass Effect 3 was sold for $60 when PS360 got the entire trilogy for the same price. Arkham City was a year old port that sold similar to some of the year old ports on Xbox One. Call of Duty & Assassin's Creed were really the only ones that had a chance of selling well. Now, if 3rd parties really had any intention of supporting Wii U then they would have had games scheduled for post-launch, which pretty much none did. In the first 3 quarters of 2013, Injustice and Splinter Cell were the only somewhat significant 3rd party titles that werent late ports, that's a span of 9 months. For the holidays it got a second batch of Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Batman but after 9 months of no support the damage was pretty much already done. Why would I buy a companies games if they are going to treat me like a 2nd class customer? |
Honestly, thinking about it now, it's not just a Wii U problem. Nintendo consoles always showed low 3rd party interest starting with the N64. It's only getting worse. Maybe 3rd parties just expect so little going in, it has become a lost cause

N64 did have a decent amount of successful 3rd party titles tho. LucasArts had alot of success with their Star Wars titles. Acclaim had alot of success with Turok and some sports titles. Wrestling games sold very well for THQ. Sports/Racing games sold well from Midway. Tony Hawk sold over 2 million despite being a late port. Actually shooters, sports and racing games sold well in general for N64.
GC also had a fair share of successful 3rd party games as well. Sonic & Super Monkey Ball sold well for Sega. The Resident Evil remake, Zero & RE4 averaged about 1.5 million each, I actually believe they could have sold better if REmake/Zero didnt release just a few months apart cannabilizing each others sales and RE4 was announced for PS2 just before it launched on GC, hurting it's sales. Tales of Symphonia is one of the best selling Tales games of all time. Soul Calibur II sold very well. Need for Speed Underground 1/2 each sold over 1 million. Spider-Man sold over 1 million. Star Wars Rogue Squadron games sold well once again.
Wii had alot of successful 3rd party games. Kids games like Lego, Skylanders, Disney games sold very strong. Dance/fitness/music games like Zumba, Just Dance, Guitar Hero, Rock Band sold alot. Madden, Need for Speed, FIFA, Tiger Woods all sold pretty well for EA. The Force Unleashed games sold well. Resident Evil games sold well. Sonic games sold well. A bunch of 3rd party games sold over 1 million on Wii.
