I don't necessarily agree with 6.2 out of 10, but I do think it's overrated. It's a fun game, but by the time the levels get really interesting, it's close to the end. It's a fun throwback game. Nothing more nothing less.

Well that's quite a feat already. I can't remember a good throwback game lately, not even Megaman 9 or 10 |
There are plenty of games that are throwbacks in terms of gameplay, if not in visual style. Bravely Default would be a good example of something with very retro sensibilities.
I think that both Mega Man 9 and 10 were better than Shovel Knight. Especially 9.

The whole knockback thing didn't bother me too much, I honestly don't remember dying a lot from falling into pits. It wasn't exactly Castlevania difficult. The bosses varied in quality I agree but I can't think of a single game where every single boss was memorable. |
The knockback thing is essential. If it wasnt in the game you could just run through it with ease. The reviewer obviously dont get that...
Thanks for the honest review.
If checkpoints negate the frustration of constantly dying, I may end up picking this one up on PS4 this year anyway.
It seems like Guacamelee is still the best platformer out for this generation (I enjoyed it more than the 2 Mario games I have).

The checkpoints are a really cool risk versus reward thing. You can just use it as a regular checkpoint or you can destroy it and get money, but if you die you have to start from the beginning of the level.

Considering how easy money is to come by, I don't think breaking checkpoints is worth it unless you want to challenge yourself.

Indeed, it deserves a 0 =P
Seriously though, I wouldn't give it a score, but I had a lot fun with it.
My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
Haven't finished it yet but so far it's completely rad.
