Well that's quite a feat already. I can't remember a good throwback game lately, not even Megaman 9 or 10

There are plenty of games that are throwbacks in terms of gameplay, if not in visual style.  Bravely Default would be a good example of something with very retro sensibilities.  

I think that both Mega Man 9 and 10 were better than Shovel Knight.  Especially 9.
