Very hard to pick a best, theres been so many! We're talking from home consoles alone right?
I'm inclined to say 1997 or 1998.
Worst has to be 2011

It would be fun to do this for Sony, Microsoft, and Sega too :)

Yes, it wasn't a bad year, but it was the most "meh" one compared to all the rest. NSMB, Wii Sports Resort, Spirit Tracks, and Bowser's Inside Story were Nintendo's biggest titles and they were all pretty much average, with 2D Mario barely nailing the upper edge. |
Wii Sports Resort was one of my favourite games of 2009, and NSMBW I liked thoroughly, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

Playing Wii Sports Resort, I loved the opening skydive sequence, as well as flying, table tennis, and archery, but what really killed it for me was the multiplayer, which is almost always turn based. NSMBW had some great levels, and sweet new powerups but just got a little boring after several worlds. Dunno, I might go back and finish it.

Same here. Some events (read: cycling) aren't much fun, but other events like table tennis, archery, and wake boarding more than make up for any duds.
1998 is unbeatable as overal gaming years go, but we got the N64 in 1997 in Europe, so we had that list's 1996 N64 games all in 1997 as well. As far as N64 goes, maybe 1997 was the best year. But, 1998 also had Link's Awakening DX. I'd say that, plus Ocarina, plus the other stuff of 1998 still make that year win. It's safe to say though that the Golden Age of gaming was surely 1997-2000.
After that it goes downhill for all of the 6th Gen, but to me Nintendo in particular. After the first couple years into the 6th Gen I basically abandoned Nintendo and console gaming, until the DS got good titles in 2006 and the Wii was released. I'd say 2005 was the low point though, right at the end of a fall that took several long years, and maybe even the worst year ever in gaming in general. Whatever good games the GameCube had were spent by this time and I still had to wait a year before Nintendo found themselves again, and I found new things on the horizon to be exited for.
Best: 1998
Worst: 2005
2012 is y favourite because I became a hardcore console gamer.(2013 is when I started to follow games, after I went on IGN and saw a article about January Ninty Direct which I watched lol) But 2014 has been amazing for the home console games, and I got a Wii U! So that's second favourite.
My least favourite is about 2011 where I bought the horrible Wii and used it for no more than 8 months....
