Don't really understand the appeal of amiibo from a video game perspective, they only have a worthwhile use in SSB, in other games they unlock items that gamers are used to getting for free as pre-order bonuses such as costumes and weapons.  Not to mention Nintendo restricted them so they can only save data from one game, so if another game gets a worthwhile use like SSB youll have to delete your SSB saved data.

They seem like a clever implementation of DLC IMO...

"The Nintendo Way".

Guess I got my hopes too high when we found out the first use, ie the smash one.  After that I thought in Hyrule Warriors the amiibo would allow you to summon an ally to fight with you on the battlefield, I thought in Xenoblade you'd be able to summon Shulk to join your party, but turns out it not anything like that.

That's how NFC generally work, it's not really fair to call it a Nintendo restriction.

I think what we will see with Amiibo is that each one has a primary function in one game (that requires data saving) and some smaller ancillary effects in other games ala the costumes in MK8. This series of Amiibo was labelled as the Smash Bros series. If we really want to see some interesting sales figures, queue Pokemon Amiibo. They will, to use the cliched phrase in a very appropriate way, print money.

I'll be willing to bet Nintendo will come up with a way to back up your Amiibo data before too long though. They have already alluded to the fact that there will be cheaper NFC tokens in the future which may very well be a way to, for example, back up your Smash Bros Captain Falcon data to make way for your F-Zero Captain Falcon data. Obviously being able to save it straight to the OS as well would be ideal.

Never even looked into any NFC before amiibo so I didn't know they were all like that.  I just expected better, after the first use they revealed in SSB, I expected equally useful features in all games that utalized amiibos.

I'm sure they probably could have included larger or multiple chips or independent storage or something to get around this limitation but I think the main idea was to make them desirable and make them cheap.

I do think if people start having to buy two of the same Amiibo though they will not be pleased so I suspect a way around this limit will be forthcoming.

p.s. I don't own any myself ;)

Here's the original article.

This is the methodology they used:

"The strength of amiibo sales surprised CONSULGAMER, especially given the competition of established players Skylanders and Disney INFINITY in a heated holiday market.  Yet amiibo sales currently shine.  A review of Best Buy’s online sales show Disney INFINITY and amiibo in a dead-heat for the top 20 game-to-toys on the market – each having ten toys in the list.  By expanding to Best Buy’s top 50 selling products on their site, the two remain tied: amiibo and Disney INFINITY each have 18 products in the top 50, with Skylanders trailing with 14 products."

I don't think anyone should use this as legitimate sales information.

Doesn't matter anyway since we don't have a time frame either.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Initial rush, which is also fueled by the looming fear of "If I don't get this thing now, I might not be able to get it ever".

Still good for Nintendo though.

Dont forget this...

Wave 1 had 12 characters...

Wave 2 has currently 6 out which all aren't even present yet as only some retailers have and have all released after Dec 18th.

There are over 30+ left :)

Not much different from Disney Infinity figurines, which save character data from that game. Gain levels and unlock new abilities from the chatacter skill tree? It gets saved to the figurine.

I am sure if these figurines found use in other title the data would need to be erased. Only so much you could hold on an item such as these.

Nintendo needs to release a title in the likes of Disney Infinity and/or Skylanders, which makes these figurines viable even if newer versions of the title are released. Extending it to mobile as well and 3DS and WiiU would be a big plus. Could sell huge numbers.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I imagine Amiibo would have had a bigger market share if Nintendo managed to keep up with demand. Still so many people who want to get the figurines, but can't because so many store have yet to recieve any stock. It's still fantastic, be a major help financially.

Might be an issue based on where you are located, but in here in New York, USA, I have no issues finding Amibos other than Villager and Link, but I also haven't checked since a few days before Christmas.

Wow, i knew they were doing well, but to have the same market share as Disney shows the power of Nintendo franchises. I look forward to the next financials from Nintendo.

In the VIDEOGAME industry? Is it really surprising Nintendo is doing well vs Disney here? In terms of mascots/franchises/videogames Nintendo far outweight Disney here :S
