I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it again with the next gen.

That wont be an issue, since next gen will be digital only. This gen is basicly digital only, since discs aar only used for first time installs. Blurays cant keep up wth demand of data the hardware can handle.

You do realize that the only problem with Blu-ray this gen is that both MS and Sony only went with 6x Blu-ray drives, right?  So, it's much quicker to install the game on the HDD, then load the game off of it.  By next gen they most likely have 32x Blu-ray drives cheap enough to throw into the next consoles.  That would make them around the same speed as a standard HDD.  Next year, they are also debuting 4K Blu-rays, which can hold up to 100GB.  I'm sure that is large enough for any game next gen.

By that logic, by next gen, cartridges will have  min 512gb storage and be a lot cheaper and be as fst as ssdhd. Considering that right now they double the speed and storege of blurays. Some even speculate that we wont need ram in the future and the storage of sd will be just as good as current ram, although by then a new ram will come up and put that one to shame. So everithing will improve with time, not just blurays, and sd cards perform better and are  cheaper and smaller already so my money is on cartridges.

I wouldn't be so sure that next gen will be digital only. Given the response from gamers this generaton, I think there would need to be a transitioning period of some sort in that case. Iirc, 20% of Sony's game sales are done digitally nowadays. That means in 80% of the cases, people prefered disc releases, for whatever reason. Of course, that number would rise with lucrative perks for buying digital, like Steam is a great example of. But there are a lot of issues with forcing everyone to go full digital. For starters, even in countries with advanced interenet infrastructure, many people still have very slow connections. Then there's the issue of possibly losing your entire gaming collection by getting your account banned, or even something as silly (but common) as forgetting your password/losing access to your email account, etc.
For every person who likes the convenience of digital only, another person likes to actually own something and add it to their collection. So having that option is good.

Read what I said in a previous comment.

Digital only is one of the possible senarios I can think that can surpass disc. But what I mainly say is that I think discs are on their way out. I said that people wh like to buy used and resale their games, for publishers to sell some type of card like type license that you can take with you to any console or sale afterwards. That way it can be all digital, but keep the perks of phisycal like used games, and borrowed games.

But what im most looking foward t is cartridges to comeback. They are better and cheaper than blurays already and last a lot longer. The best thing is that they are much faster than bluray so dont need to install games on harddrives, and also they have bigger storrage on smaller space and easy to rewright, so thiings like patches and dlc can wright on the cartrige and sve room on harddrive. They consume a lot less energy, dont overheat, dont tend to break. The best thing is backwrds compatability, like nintendos heandhealds are always compatable, and if they wanted they coud have made it gameboy advance compatble in they still sold thouse games.

So I dont hope for all digital future, just thiink discs are on their last consoles. And there are ways to make digital still have the perks of physiical format.

They were allowed to sell X1 there earlier than PS4. Maybe locking the device got it approved faster? Just a thought.

If that happened then it is really weird... most probable MS forced region lock and not China.

This thread was interesting to read...

To be fair I don't understood why the Xbone is locked in China... makes no sense at all.

To go against piracy of new games at 60 dollars they decided to release games at 40, but to keep profit there they put no second hand drm, and to prevent explotaition in other markets they region locked... just don't know why they tough it would work and sell good numbers.

Please show me a cartdridge that costunder 5 dollars and hold 50 GB of data so we can even start discussion.

they decided for slower bluray driver and hdd install to save costs (and we are in the beginning of gen), ps3 uses bd and you don't need full install even at 2x read speed... but at the beggining of gen there were hefty instalation times.

It holds a little more, I hope thats ok. Anything else you need? Just keep in mind that when orderd in bulk they will get cheaper, and by not needing to make it so small, and this is mae for usb, so if they make it a game cartrige they can be a lot faster than for a universal port.

Beware of fake capacity SD memory cards. This and many other cheap, apparently-high-capacity SD memory cards are often low capacity 4GB or 8GB cards that have been hacked (controller chip parameters altered) by dishonest Chinese suppliers so that they show a false inflated capacity. That is why their price is so low. These cards are then redistributed by many clueless resellers and by many other fully-aware resellers who are out to make a quick profit.

Such cards will show their false capacity both in your phone and in Windows properties, and they will even work normally under low usage. However, once their true (low) capacity is exceeded, they will quietly lose or corrupt your valuable data. Files will look okay in their folders, but will be corrupt when viewed, played, or otherwise read back. Your photos, videos, music, contact list, and other data will be irretrievably lost.

Be especially wary of cards with a stated capacity of 64GB or above marked as "SDHC" (not "SDXC"). The SD card association controls and licenses the SD card standards and they define "SDHC" up to a maximum capacity of 32GB. For larger capacity cards, only the "SDXC" standard is valid.

Good 64GB SD cards are out there, but they will conform to the SDXC standard and will be clearly marked as such. Expect to pay roughly $25 and up for 64GB (as of Q4 2014) and at least twice that for 128GB cards.

If you do buy a low-priced card, the first thing you should do is test the capacity using a utility called h2testw. This will fill the card with data and then verify that it can be read back intact. The write phase usually completes without error. It is the verify phase that exposes the fake capacity. Testing the first 32GB is usually sufficient.

Search for "fake capacity flash" using your favorite search engine for more information.

Please now link a SD card (it isn't a cartdrige but ok) from a thrustworthy company with this capacity and it/s speed. Because the link you gave is from a fake ship from a dishonest company and don't even have read/writing speed listed.

An 6x BD drive is 27 MB/s so an equivalent SD card from a thrusted brand would be this http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDSDU-064G-A11-Ultra-UHS-I-Class/dp/B007B5RJA6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420057755&sr=8-2&keywords=64+gb+card that costs 40 bucks a piece... But that have the same speed as 6x BD so not only costs 40 times more than a media, and would cost a lot more to be loaded by game company it won't give you an advantage... so let's look at something that would be superior.

To have 3x the speed http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-Memory-Speeds-Ready-SDSDQXP-064G-G46A/dp/B00NUB3530/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1420057755&sr=8-9&keywords=64+gb+card it would cost you 160x more than a disc.

Sure it will cost a lot less in batches and from lesser know brands, but sure aint beat disc cost.

Anything else?

Yea I knew, I was just hoping nobody would call me on that bluf :p

But speed is just how fast they can make the card for a universal fit, where they to make it for a single console exclusive cartridge they can make it a lot faster, much cheaper then the slow universal types. The same can be almost said about storage, not as much true, so it can be ignore, but for mass production it can be a significant save.

I have nothing to back this up, exept that I hear the 3ds can store 8gb and it cost a couple of bucks, I would asume a 64gb would only cost them 5-8$.

Another thing is that prices are adjusted now as prices where before for when cardtriges where expensive. When they went to cds and started saving money, we did not see that saving and saw a $60 flat rate for new games, and now we have dlc and microtransactions. At least $30 is pure profit. I they want to avoid a no digital only future, it would only cost them a couple of extra bucks. Not that expensive for them to compain now. Although they will find a way to charge us for that in some type of on disc dlc or pay to win microtransaction.
