I wouldn't be surprised if they tried it again with the next gen.

That wont be an issue, since next gen will be digital only. This gen is basicly digital only, since discs aar only used for first time installs. Blurays cant keep up wth demand of data the hardware can handle.

You do realize that the only problem with Blu-ray this gen is that both MS and Sony only went with 6x Blu-ray drives, right?  So, it's much quicker to install the game on the HDD, then load the game off of it.  By next gen they most likely have 32x Blu-ray drives cheap enough to throw into the next consoles.  That would make them around the same speed as a standard HDD.  Next year, they are also debuting 4K Blu-rays, which can hold up to 100GB.  I'm sure that is large enough for any game next gen.

By that logic, by next gen, cartridges will have  min 512gb storage and be a lot cheaper and be as fst as ssdhd. Considering that right now they double the speed and storege of blurays. Some even speculate that we wont need ram in the future and the storage of sd will be just as good as current ram, although by then a new ram will come up and put that one to shame. So everithing will improve with time, not just blurays, and sd cards perform better and are  cheaper and smaller already so my money is on cartridges.
