Nobody is comparing it to DS, the OP is comparing 2014 sales to 2013 sales. YOY, 3DS is showing a very large drop, 2013-14.4 million vs 2014-9.5ish million. That's down about 35% YoY which is pretty significant.

I know, I'm just referring to people that have been comparing them and citing that as a reason why even though the 3DS isn't doing as well, as a handheld in 2014 it did pretty good.

There really just wasn't as huge of software this year. We had Smash, Bravely Default, Kirby, Pokemon, etc. but 2013 had Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, Zelda, Shin Megami Tensei, Pokemon, DK, etc. Which is really hard to beat. I think the software in 2013 really pushed it as far as possible and they could only go down from there, which is natural after a peak year.

The OP even states that it was expected for 3DS to be down this year considering the excellent lineup 2013 had. Being down by about 5 million or roughly 35% is pretty drastic tho. If 3DS were down 15-20% then this discussion likely wouldn't be happening right now since that is an acceptable YoY drop for a device that has peaked.

Overall I believe Smash being delayed, causing a 4 month drought alongside a long overdue price cut that never came caused the YoY drop to be worse than it should have been. Smash Bros in August alongside a price cut (2DS-$99, 3DS-$129, XL-$149) would likely have caused the drop to not be so severe, perhaps 15-20% instead of 35%.

I agree. Honestly, 2015 might be a better year than 2014 if they give a pricecut + appropriate software and if the New 3DS launch in the Americas + Europe goes over well. It really just depends.

In the west, the announcement of the N3DS has a lot of costumers waiting for the new model instead of buying the old ones. It needed an international release. But in general all consoles sales are mediocre, the only exception is the PS4. The 3DS is not over yet, there is still space for more games: 2D Metroid, Advance Wars, another Fire Emblem (now that the franchise is popular), another Professor Layton, a good Pokemon spinoff, the arrival of Youkai Watch to the west, all of the GC/Wii ports possible with the N3DS...

I think people are really overstating the effect of the New 3DS announcement. Sales in the west were down by a pretty solid margin all year, even in the months before the announcement.

So what?It was neeeding a revision from february!Dsi and dsi xl had two years and one year respectively, while were more succesful, then the successor to ds,the 3ds came!Even dslite had two years and then got a major revision!3DS will have reach 4 years and 3ds xl almost three years before it gets the major revision(New3ds/xl)!*In the west

That has absolutely nothing to do with what was said. Darwin said the announcement of New 3DS caused sales in the west to suffer, I explained to him that sales were down by a large margin before the announcement even happened.

Ur post is completely irrelevant to what I and Darwin said.

But that statement was directly linked with the previous sentence and a response to Darwins post, in which case ur post was just a rant that didn't pertain to the point I was trying to get across to Darwin.

How quickly everyone forgets the 2DS.  Revisions are just a bandaid, not a solution.

- The software gaps of major releases compared to 2013. After Spring in 2014, it took forever for major software to hit and really compared to 2013, you could argue the first major game that wasn't a niche genre like JRPG or puzzle game was Smash for 3DS.

- Announcing and releasing (in Japan and Australia) the New 3DS without any sign of a nearby NA or Europe launch. Pretty much killed sales in the West for all potential purchasers that are knowledgeable of gaming news since even more so then the DSi, the new upgrade is a clearly stronger product that seems to deliver the second analog people have wanted for the 3DS as well as more power and better 3D. Makes those like myself that were waiting to upgrade into a 3DS XL feel better and those that were waiting for the obvious Nintendo upgrade to their handheld feel vindicated in not buying one of the originals, XL or the 2DS.

Well alot of kids want ipads and tablets instead even though the are very simple (temple run etc)

Yeah, sure. Let's reduce mobile gaming to simple endless runners like Temple Run. There aren't any better games for iPads, iPhones and Android devices available!

How everyone forgets that 2DS is a downgrade...

So should revisions only sell to existing owners?  That just furthers my point of it being a bandaid and not a solution.
