Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One readies shift to 20nm – but can a smaller node help it match the PS4’s performance?

The move to 20nm will only make the console cheaper and cooler to produce, that's it.

Microsoft won't launch a more powerful Xbox One because that would damage them even more than the DRM fiasco before launch, and it's too early to launch a Slim version. That will come around mid-gen to give its console a new push.

Please excuse my bad English.

Yeah definitely see MS reducing the size of the unit/chips. They certainly have more scope for a slim than Sony do.

In terms of slim's, isn't this a bit soon compared to previous slims though? Hasn't it normally taken 2 years at least to release a new form factor?

Yes I think this would be the fastest move to the slim. PS3 took 3 years if my memory serves me right. So if they launched fall of next year, would be by far the quickest rebrand. However maybe this is another reason they made it so big.

I agree they won't upgrade and for really how much more power, it really is not worth it. People are buying the console upon a cheaper price. rather then put all that time, effort and money, Just keep it $50 cheaper then PS4 the whole gen.

Nope, not breaking the tradition. They're happy enough that they can bring a new model and produce cheaper and stay profitable and competitive. They won't waste all that for a very minor improvement of the chip.

Also if MS is already shrinking, Sony will not be far behind.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

It would actually be hilarious if MS made a slightly more powerful xone as it would be the ultimate, in a long list, of "FUs" to early adopters. But it's not going to happen.

Do people not think that that the reason of the redesigns so quick for the previous consoles was because of the problems the early designs had in terms of reliability? Didn't the original Xbox360 go through three internal changes before going to slim all to reduce failure rate and heat?

The thing is, the consoles this time around so far seem to be much more reliable and less prone to breaking down. So in that case I don't think a change is imminent and won't happen for a couple of years to give console sales a bit of a "kick start" as and when needed.

PREDICTIONS FOR END OF 2015: (Made Jan 1st 2015)

PS4 - 34M - XB1 - 21m - WII U -12M

Expect only reduced costs.

Slim probably only on 2016 or the earliest holidays 2015.

Upgrading the power could alienate current owners even more or make people not invested yet think that maybe in another 1-2years another revision will make their consoles useless. Consoles aren't iPads so that would be to risk.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

upgrading consoles after launch is bullshit. No manufacturer would do this, and even if there wouldn't be a developer sane enough to try to max out the new more powerful console, as they would receive a gigantic shitstorm.

A facepalm worthy article - yeah, MS will improve performance of die-shrinked XOne and piss off 10+ mil of their existing users.

And Sony will do the same, just to show them they can be even bigger dicks by pissing off their 17+ million base.

If they make it more powerfull people will be pissed and confused. Console manufactors should open up their system and make the consoles upgradble (graphicscard) if they are thinking about uprading it. But buying consoles like a smartphone every second year wont work its too expensive, confusing and ineffecient.
