Forums - Gaming Discussion - Hackers Explain Why They Took Down XBL And PSN, XBL Was Easier To Hack

As if stopping massive DDoS attacks is done with a flip of a switch. There is no short term measure to stop it and any long term measure isn't worth the time or money.

Pretty much. Unless your network is so ridiculously huge that stuffing it become impractically (e.g. google), there's little you can do to effectively stop a DDoS. The only reason this one is particularly new worthy is the date it happend. The event itself is pretty common.

...Because Sony & Microsoft are billionaire company? And no, they did DDoS, not hack.

What I actually want to see from them is taking down the networks for at least a week. Short term attacks are easy. If they are able to keep it up for weeks, only then they have real leverage. Until then they're nothing more than a slight annoyance.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

While DDOS is easy in theory, it isn't quite so easy to take down huge networks like PSN or Live. You'll need one shitload of botnets. Where do you get those? Well, you could just buy bandwidth and servers in masses. But that would be expensive as fuck and you also would be easy to Track down. Better Option is to infiltrate other computers, be it servers or just some random PC. Hohe can you use those? With hacking.

Also, it will be much easier to take down the services If you directly mess up with security measures. There are indeed ways to protect yourself from DDOS attacks. And there are ways to hack such defenses.

I don't know the exact security of either live or PSN, neither do I know what Lizard Squad did exactly. But I'm pretty sure some hacking was involved. If it would really be that easy for each and every Script Kiddie to take down the networks, you would See a whole lot of more outages.

That said, those Guys are still dicks.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Like anyone would believe in those so called self-proclaimed heros.

botnets can be rented from various groups or it is just a matter of seeding a few torrents with infected games and you can easily get a large number of bots. You do not need to hack anything to bring someone down with a DDoS attack, it is simply a matter of generating more traffic than the network can handle. DDoS attacks ARE extremely common and are bringing down networks all the time, it does take a lot of bots though to bring down something like PSN or Live and such attacks usually result in them losing a lot of there bot army afterwards as companies like MS and Sony have the resources to take down a lot of there botnet.

DDoS is not a hack. It's an asshole move to block traffic so gamers can't get in. Xbox Live was not hacked. PSN was not hacked. Hacking requires intelligence. DDoS only requires only a desire for attention.

They didn't hack anything.

And the Asshole of the year award goes to...

These guys. I mean, why not use this energy to attack online predators, child pornogrphers, identity theives, or Ubisoft. Real monsters! Instead, they stop little kids from playing video games on Christmas morning. Really big men, those guys.

I haven't really touched my consoles in days and when I do, it'll be single player for a while. Still pointless douchebag behavior.

Well, if they were actual hackers they could.  However, all these guys did was a DDoS attack, while hundreds of thousands of new users were trying to log in, as well.  So, if you think about it, the new customers did half of their work for them.
