While DDOS is easy in theory, it isn't quite so easy to take down huge networks like PSN or Live. You'll need one shitload of botnets. Where do you get those? Well, you could just buy bandwidth and servers in masses. But that would be expensive as fuck and you also would be easy to Track down. Better Option is to infiltrate other computers, be it servers or just some random PC. Hohe can you use those? With hacking.

Also, it will be much easier to take down the services If you directly mess up with security measures. There are indeed ways to protect yourself from DDOS attacks. And there are ways to hack such defenses.

I don't know the exact security of either live or PSN, neither do I know what Lizard Squad did exactly. But I'm pretty sure some hacking was involved. If it would really be that easy for each and every Script Kiddie to take down the networks, you would See a whole lot of more outages.

That said, those Guys are still dicks.

botnets can be rented from various groups or it is just a matter of seeding a few torrents with infected games and you can easily get a large number of bots. You do not need to hack anything to bring someone down with a DDoS attack, it is simply a matter of generating more traffic than the network can handle. DDoS attacks ARE extremely common and are bringing down networks all the time, it does take a lot of bots though to bring down something like PSN or Live and such attacks usually result in them losing a lot of there bot army afterwards as companies like MS and Sony have the resources to take down a lot of there botnet.
