The faction that's only ever bought Nintendo consoles and will only buy them, unless some period occurs in the future where he has a lot of time and disposable money?

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
#1 just won't work for Nintendo. The call of duty obsessed people of the world have simply either moved on from Nintendo or grew up playing those games and never experienced the charm of Nintendo games. I doubt they will return or come to Nintendo ever. It's time to forget about them and move on to satisfying those who grew up on Nintendo and who are raising their children to actually enjoy games that are innovative and creative (and aren't just cinematic softcore porn experiences with explosions).
Carry on with the revolution-then-evolution cycles.
The current home console evolution will force them to go alone in the new cycle. I've said before that they should wait out this gen, improve their online functions, strengthen the eShop and improve their online stores. Next-gen they go blue ocean with a real Nintendo Box, not ambigious like this gen, continued to be built for their development strenghts and going for the niche between mobile and currrent AAA development; the return to arcady games.
2. Red Oceans Handled/tablet Market!!!!!!!!
I really like the idea of joining the two together. So, if Japan likes handhelds more or the want to play pokemon , they need to buy the complete package too. It might be expensive though, BUT Smartphones comes out every year and their nearly twice as much as the consoles or handhelds.
And developers have to make their game function on both devices =D
Pocky Lover Boy!

Basically what dulfite said.
Also, if Nintendo goes with #1(as much as I would like to see them succeed), I've learned I don't necessarily need a ton of ram and processing power to enjoy good games. Wii and WiiU have really hammered that point home strictly on good gameplay front and the games are gorgeous for many reasons.
We already have two consoles again that are basically the same. They will have good exclusives and lots of good 3rd party, but for me personally, my 20s were ate up with CoD, GTA, Saints Row and other FPS. I'm just bored of that type of stuff. I've burned through a lot of the exclusives last gen for those systems and only just realized what a great library the Wii had in the last year or so. It's cyclical. I essentially took about 8 years off of Nintendo and just finished up a huge run on Xbox and Playstation that's went strong since 2001 and 1995 respectively.
My only real big wish for WiiU or whatever successor they have is that notification of friend requests, friends online status and messages was overt so I can answer someone in a few moments rather than a few days when I finally notice the icon on the home screen. Gameplay wise Nintendo is doing great and if WiiU really did turn a profit, then their sustainability is safe.

And that has to do with what I posted...?

If Nintendo fails and goes third party some people would be able to play the games they like without being mocked by 12 year olds and manchildren for owning a Nintendo console. Or that's what they believe.
Either blue or ambiguous. They can't go red ever again, the GameCube proved this. Nintendo pretty much can only exist in their own niche if they want to keep going in the gaming business. Also, going third party would kill Nintendo's gaming business faster than anything else would, so they need to be able to keep making consoles.
