Ultimately Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is another must-have title in Nintendo's expanding lineup of Wii U software - a game that is perfectly realised within the constraints of the system, achieving everything it sets out to accomplish. It's an approach we'd like to see more developers take - to find beauty in restraint. This is the type of game that will remain fun to play years down the line, well after the Wii U is off the market, and the product you get on the disc is all you'll need. In that sense Nintendo is still delivering products today just as they have for decades - an almost flawless consistency that's a rare and precious thing. |
I almost cried.

This game perfectly symbolizes the simple beauty of Nintendo. And their determination to make games that both run smooth and look gorgeous. Well done, EAD.
I am surprised they even did it with Captain Toad. I kinda thought they would rather be targeting more "AAA" games but oh well, nice to see dem smooth 60fps none the less

Huh? Plenty of games run at 60FPS on both |
Nah, not really. A lot more on the PS though.
For some games I rather have prettier graphics and 30 fps though. Like Zelda. But 30fps in a racing game? I'm not touching garbage like that with a ten foot pole. Mario Kart 8 with 3 or four players locally isn't any fun to me because of that. I usually play it online together with a friend (locally).
That's what made MK: DD so great... 60fps even with four players.
You know, I've been thinking...space is really easy to do graphically. And Mario Galaxy didn't have too many enormous open plains or anything...how glorious would a Mario Galaxy 3 be on Wii U? I mean, seeing this game as beautiful as it is, now I really want to see it.

*sigh* this again? They didn't bitch about it, they were pretty clear about how small an issue it was. To quote them exactly "most will probably not notice it at all, and it has zero affect on playability". The entire purpose of DF is to analyse video games. Nit picking somewhat comes with the territory. Them mentioning something doesn't mean they thing it's an issue of earth shattering proportions, they're just doing what they're paid for. |
"In typical Nintendo fashion (Mario Kart 8 aside), the game's performance analysis offers little more than a completely horizontal line. It's particularly refreshing to see this level of solidity after the disappointments of this holiday season."

Because Ps4 and Xbox one don't hide behind cellshading everytime to make things look prettier.
Cell shading makes low resolution textures look better. You don't even need high poly models you just need to say "this isn't low poly,it's our art design".
Take MK8 for example,it's a gorgeous game, but if pay attention you will see low res ground textures here and there; you will see "Blocky" models here and there. But nobody cares cause cell shading make it look pretty.
tl;dr If a ultra realistic game has low resolution textures or low poly models, people would notice. If a nintendo game have, nobody care cause cell shading.

Yet Nintendo doesn't always make cel shaded games and they also have 60 fps. Metroid Prime 1 & 2, better looking games than the entire PS2 library, have 60 frames per second. Rock solid! Metroid Prime 3 is also 60fps.
Oh and have fun with 30 fps (and less) in LittlebigPlanet 3... A non-realistic looking game...
Ps: take a look at the ground textures on Sherbet Land for MK8. They're gorgeous. As are the ice walls in the tunnel. It's surprisingly realistic actually.
