Still the console with the worst third party support of the three, still the least powerful, still launching at $350, still ending last, still losing money.
EDIT - Wait, are you subtly implying that the NES was a conventional console back in 1983?

I don't think MS could catch them if they had a stronger first year which they would have with a more conventional console.
Lots of people owning a PS3/360 were sick of the long generation, it's precisely why the PS4/X1 are selling as well as they have even though the libraries for both are fairly weak. People want something new to buy.
What Nintendo gave them though was not enough of an upgrade on the PS3/360 they already had at home (and yes, even many Wii games eventually supplanted their Wii with a PS3 or 360 ... so the idea of the Wii concept just in HD was never going to be enough Nintendo).
Call of Duty on Wii U looks ... pretty much exactly like COD on PS3/360. "New" Super Mario Bros. U looks an awfully lot like NSMB Wii just in HD (another mistake, why not go balls to the wall with this title?).

That's a lie. PS4 and XB1 are selling well because they'll get CoD, Fifa and Assassins's Creed for the next years. Those are the games people want, those are the games people are buying in PS4/XB1.
All i can say is if comparable ports off game such as gta eldars scrolls destiny etc where on wii u i wouldnt off bought a ps4 aswell as.a.wiiu.
My Nintendo console this generation would have been something similar to the latest ps3 case, slightly larger with a cheap sliding door and top loading disc rather than an expensive less reliable mechanism.
It would probably have had 2GB of main memory for games and 256MB of GDDR memory for video plus 32MB cache to help optimise the use of slower main memory.
The cpu would be a dual core design but full cores running at something like 2.4ghz
The background operating system would be fully optimised and minimalised. To load the nintendo shop you would have to fully come out of any game and run the application. None of this concurrent rubbish which reduces memory available to games.
It would be powerful enough to run wii and gamecube games by emulation and those games would be loadable by original disc or the nintendo shop.
I would of used a gpu of about 800gflops performance and cpu equivilant to at least 2x the power of 360/ps3.
It would have a supplied tray for adding a sata 2.5 drive but no drive would be pre-fitted. A small amount of flash memory would be built in like 8GB. Same arrangemant as ps3 12GB.
The controller would be the main design target, something small and comfortable for all ages, great vibration features including the main pad and the triggers, decent analogue triggers.
The console would have the space for one expansion board which would be a VR expansion card that would add an additional gpu, cpu and memory card later on to enable VR use.
At the time of the VR card and visor launch a new console would be available capable of VR out of the box to the same standard.
Through out the launch I would of made free games available (N64, snes etc for download) so the sooner you buy the console the more free games you get with big bonus games available around holidays like christmas and easter etc. Taking advantage of Nintendo's past catalogue to help push hardware sales.
I would make later wii games dual compatible with the new console so those who buy those games already have available games for their new console when they upgrade. These would be mainly high res versions of the same games and would come on dvd rather than blue-ray.
The important difference with my console would have been multi-format games would have been easily superior to 360 and PS3 versions and the console could have come out earlier than the original wii u.
It would have launched in multiple colours, black, white, silver, red etc.
Each console would come with a welcome disc which includes hi-res versions of Mario Galaxy and Mario kart wii plus numerous graphic demos, playable demos and video of upcoming titles.
The retail price in the UK would have been £249. A easily realistic price for the hardware supplied. Inferior gpu hardware to xbone/ps4 but still far ahead of 360/ps3. About half-way house between ps3/360 and ps4/xbone in cpu performance and memory capacity.
The design of it would have the disc door in the middle with the main board one side and the board expansion and hard drive the other. The door would have a transparent window so you could see the disc spinning (oldschool).
Well it would have been my preference for a wii u console anyway and something that was actually competitive in performance.

They will release new console around 2017. but surely powerful than XB1, at least one pair with PS4.
It would of helped a lot but the problem lies with nintendo itself. I hate sounding like a broken record but it needs to attract adult core gamers. If only they would do that...
Current numbers
1st PS4 16.1 million
2nd xbone 9,1 million
3rd wii u 7.9 million
If Nintendo would focus a lot more adult core games while still making their classics for their fanbase.
1st PS4 14.1 million
2nd wii u 12.9 million
3rd xbone 6.1 million
I believe if the wii u had a lot more adult themed games and all the 3rd party games that the other two had, it's sales would be on par with ps4's because it would of drawn some of the core gamers that bought either a ps4 or xbone. The console doesn't need to change (different controller and can play blu ray and dvds), it's nintendo's leadership's way of thinking that needs to change.

That would flop. It would run into the same problem the Wii U has ... not being enough of an upgrade over the PS3/360, only by 2017 everyone and their grandma will have a PS4/X1 and those systems will have hundreds of games and entrenched online communities that players won't want to leave.
Such a console would have be a large upgrade over the PS4, at minimum the jump between the Dreamcast and N64/Playstation 1, which was immediately noticable.

Agreed I think they kinda need to accept that the era of the "toy console" has come to an end. We had that debate during the PS2/GCN/XBox era, the people voted and Nintendo's take on thet home console lost.
People don't want a console that looks or feels like a child's toy.
Not much would have changed sadly.... It might have had a bit more 3rd party support ( CoD and AC), but that's about it! :/
