I don't think MS could catch them if they had a stronger first year which they would have with a more conventional console. 

Lots of people owning a PS3/360 were sick of the long generation, it's precisely why the PS4/X1 are selling as well as they have even though the libraries for both are fairly weak. People want something new to buy. 

What Nintendo gave them though was not enough of an upgrade on the PS3/360 they already had at home (and yes, even many Wii games eventually supplanted their Wii with a PS3 or 360 ... so the idea of the Wii concept just in HD was never going to be enough Nintendo). 

That's a lie. PS4 and XB1 are selling well because they'll get CoD, Fifa and Assassins's Creed for the next years. Those are the games people want, those are the games people are buying in PS4/XB1.
