The character is a reincarnated/alternate time line version of other characters, I don't think it would be a big deal.

If Link was a singular character that was always the same person in every game, OK, but since each Link is supposedly different whatever.

I think it would be funny to see the nerd rage if they did it.

I'm not really seeing the logic. I prefer Link to be male, but I don't see why he can't be a female character. Could he not be a female when he is reincarnated?
