Forums - Nintendo - Sakurai doesn’t think he’ll work on another Smash Bros. game

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai addressed the series’ future in the latest issue of Game Informer.

Speaking about whether or not we’ll see another game in the series, Sakurai mentioned that he “can’t deny the chance for another.” He adds, however: “as for myself, I don’t think there will be.”

Sakurai spoke about how the goal with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U “was to provide extra merits to the game which go far beyond the sale price.” Limits have already been surpassed in terms of scope and content.

Sakurai does mention towards the end of his comments: “I also have trouble picturing someone else taking my place and providing all this value-added content without me.”

I remember him saying something similar after Brawl. Maybe in a few years, he'll change his mind again.

Signature goes here!

He said that during Melee, then got angry at Nintendo for not telling him they're were making Brawl.

You always say this, yet you always make the next Smash Bros. game. You can't blame us for not taking these comments seriously anymore.

You won't be saying that when ur friend iwata comes and begs at ur door step!

I always just conclude what really is going to happen is the opposite of what he says.

Keiner kann ihn bremsen, keiner macht ihm was vor. Immer der richtige Schuss, immer zur richtigen Zeit. Superfussball, Fairer Fussball. Er ist unser Torschützenkönig und Held.

I think it'd be great if he could take on another project, I thoroughly enjoyed Kid Icarus: Uprising. Maybe he should have a bit of a break first...

Sequels will be made as long as a series sells. Therefore there will be another SSB.

His poor health has been documented extensively. I'm sure that has a little something to do with it. I don't think we've seen the last of Smash, though...which is an excitingly terrifying concept. Who knows who will be in charge of the next installment. There's certainly enough team members from these last couple (all?) that will be able to continue where he left off. In some ways this could be really good for the franchise as someone with new eyes on the project will be able to do some different things.

Sakurai has stated that he doesn't know what else he would do with the game anyway. That's kind of a sign that he's ready to move on from it. New blood, probably someone who apprenticed beneath him, could be an interesting thing. They will have much to prove...and at least 3 years to brainstorm the next iteration.
