Forums - Gaming - Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2 were released at Bad times

What? If the timing were bad for those games, then what the hell do you have to say about driveclub and LBP3? Those are flops too. Fact is, all these games are great but they all get swallowed up by call of duty, halo, GTA etc. Thats what's wrong with the industry to be honest. Everyone wants Microsoft to fund new IPs all the time. But why would they when people like everyone in this forum and GAF and others dont even bother to buy them? Instead they give you more halo. Which is fine with me, but im just trying to prove a point. Sony spends a lot on new IPs but no one buys them. Sad but true. Truth is, these games would get swallowed up regardless of what the calendar says.

I have to agree. Microsoft is putting all of their effort into the Holidays... but they could increase their overall baseline throughout the year by spreading things out. I believe that Phil Spencer alluded to this during an interview where he said that next year, some things my be purposely delayed. Going into 2015, Sony definitely has the early advantage with 2 big exclusives in the first quarter. With Battlefield aligned with PlayStation in March, Microsoft is kinda stuck until next Holiday. I am expecting Quantum Break to be pushed up to Q2 at the latest. This gives them a chance to have a big release before Tomb Raider and Halo 5.

I am expecting Gears to be pushed to Q1 2016.

Sunset came out at a bad time but not Forza. I actually blame MS for not trying harder with Sunset. It needed much more promotion.

Should have saved Forza till Q1 2015 imo

Yeah I agree 100% with this. Now there's nothing for the first 6 months of 2015 on X1. Fable might come though but that will flop for sure.

Is that a joke? The commercials on TV ran non stop, and they hyped it on every press release.

Promotion only started like a week before it came out. That's not enough.

Sunset Overdrive did pretty bad considering all the factors.

Forza Horizon 2 did ok since it outsold Driveclub and the racing genre is in the decline atm.

Halo MCC did good, and will continue to do good with the install base of the XB1 increasing.

Personally I never saw a single ad for Sunset Overdrive around the time it released, and only a few for FH2. It seemed to me like most of Microsoft ad budget for this Holiday season went to their 3rd party marketing deal games, AC Unity, The Crew, and Dragon Age Inquisition, I've seen more ads for those 3 than Sunset Overdrive and FH2 combined. Didn't see too many Halo ads either.

I saw a few ads but they only started a week before it came out. I saw none for FH2 and haven't seen anything for the MCC (although I'm not watching much tv these days).

Actually they have 3 games coming in the first half of 2015, Screamride, Ori and the Blind Forest, and State of Decay. None of those 3 is likely do do as well as The Order or Bloodborne, but the combined effect of those 3 plus Microsoft's 3rd party marketing deal games for the 1st quarter (Witcher 3 and Evolve) should keep Xbox One up over baseline decently. I actually think it would have been better to delay Sunset instead of Forza Horizon 2, if they had released it in February or March it would have done better imo.

None of those are system sellers.

And if the price rises back to $399 then I think X1 will go even lower than 50k  a week. They need to make this $349 price drop permanent. Its the only way X1 can do well against the PS4.

I agree about making the price drop permanent, I also think they should expand it to other countries. Europe is in bad need of a price drop down to 350 euros or maybe even lower, PS4 is just walking all over Xbox One there. I also think they should do bundles for Evolve and Witcher 3, make proper use of those marketing rights they bought for them. $350 Witcher 3 and Evolve bundles would sell well enough to counter any PS4 sales boost caused by The Order and Bloodborne I think.

Europe needs a lot of work.. If they want to be succesful in there, they are gonna have to make some big pricedrops and inccur some heavy losses.

Well X1 bundles for $350 with new games will help X1 sell well during those months, but PS4 will still sell significantly more, even in the US.
