Forums - Gaming - Wii Userbase - What the #@??

Although there is definitely some truth to Wii users "not buying games" (more casual gamers?), basing any sort of conclusion off the performance of the "shithouse" Spiderman 3 is insane.

The fact that the Wii has 4-5 1 million (or higher) sellers right now suggests that Wii owners definitely buy games...

This is a worthy topic for discussion - I would not be at all surprised if the Wii userbase buys very different games from the PS3/360 userbase. And there will be a casual-gamer contingent that paid $250 to enjoy Wii Sports and will only get around to buying something new once in a while, with no interest in playing Mario, Madden or any other established videogame franchise. But it's always dangerous to extrapolate from insufficient data -- the Wii is running at about 2:1 for installed hardware base and a similar ratio for software sales for the most recent American results, so there can't be too big a difference. Third-party developers are going to have to experiment to figure out what sells on the Wii, just as they did for the DS. That will take some time, but there have been hits for Ubisoft, EA, Sega and Activision, just as there have been flops. There's no indication that EVERY third-party game is bombing -- it's a marketplace, and the Wii's audience reaches way beyond "Nintendo fans." That makes for a lot of unknown quantities, which is why it's fun to track these numbers. No one in this thread has mentioned these numbers (probably because they don't support a dramatic fanboy argument on either side >:) ), so I'll throw them into the pot as additional data (current week from 05/06 US VGCharz data): #29 Wii Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 EA 9,076 192,994 #150 PS3 Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 EA 1,663 139,585 #71 360 Call of Duty 3 Activision 4,079 1,048,435 #95 Wii Call of Duty 3 Activision 2,914 298,811 #120 PS3 Call of Duty 3 Activision 2,152 237,155

I would feel for bad for closing a thread that attacks the Wii, because that might be biased of me. Oh teh noes!
Well, I just locked a thread about "PS3 losing exclusives" so the fanboys have nothing to argue about.

The fact is, games that have been developed exclusively or with the Wii strongly in mind have done very well in sales. I don't know what gebx was trying to prove by showing us that Rayman and Sonic sold better on the Wii than on the PS3. The PS3 Sonic is crap, and Rayman was designed for the Wii in the first place. So of course they sold better. Red Steel sold well.
But do you acknowledge that? No. You show us Spiderman 3...the crappiest example of a 3rd party game save for FarCry.

The consensus seems to be that if 3rd parties build games from the ground up for the Wii, they have much better potential to sell well...the problem is people can't compare them to PS3 sales, and so they never acknowledge such games, like Red Steel.

This thread might not have been made to bait users into stupid fanboy arguments, but that's what it came out to be. I'm sick of all the "kiddy" attacks and pointless arguments about whether Wii Sports or Play is a legitimate game. I know plenty of people that own a Wii, but haven't bought hardly any games for it...that doesn't mean they don't play Wii Sports every day, or rent games when they come out. In fact, most of my friends have been renting, and buying the ones they loved like Super Paper Mario, Red Steel and SSX Blur.

This had potential to legitimately discuss how "casual" the Wii's audience really is...so come back next time with better information backing up your arguments and less fanboy twisting. You got a problem with that, take it up with me.

EDIT: I missed the post above me, and after thinking, I'll give this thread another chance. Maybe we could take into account ALL the numbers that apply? Not just the ones that suit our agenda, mm? Just know that I'm *this close to the Lock button.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Two of those are pack-in games (Wii Sports and Wii Play), 1 is a Zelda game that would have sold anyways, and 2 are (third party?) and the announcement was made but the numbers don't support it yet, maybe they were talking "shipped", lol ;)

Wrong, Wii Sports not packed in, in Japan and has passed a million there, Wario Ware and Zelda are past a million, and Red Steel, Rayman and SPM will likely pass very soon

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Wii Sports just passed 1.5 million in Japan (about a 55% attatch ratio on average for the year so far), and Red Steel/Rayman are in the 800-850k range worldwide. I believe Sonic has already passed 500k worldwide, and Tiger Woods is probably around the 350k worldwide range so far, it seems to be doing slightly better in Europe than North America.

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

Alright, I doubt that we will be going too far down that road anymore now that the boss has come in and straightened things out a little. I say it's simple, the DS is just as casual as the Wii if not more so and look at its sales records. It's been out for quite a bit longer too, so it could easily be a way of looking ahead.

Japanese developers apparently would want to drop the money on the PS3/360. Just ask... any of them. Wii Play's sales do nothing for third party developers, except that they help build the userbase, so maybe in two years it will be worth releasing games for the system. RE4 did well? When? As for Rogue Squadron, I'm expecting more out of Factor 5 now that they're teamed up with Sony. Nintendo's been rushing out half assed efforts and still selling. Why? People buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games. As to third party games selling on Nintendo systems if they're good, there is very little evidence to suggest this. Surely not every single third party game made for a Nintendo system sucks.
