Forums - Sony - Did Sony get too cocky not matching the Xbone's price drop this holiday season?

Yup.

Too Cocky that they don't even need to worry because the best selling Xbox1 for all of 2014 is the Titanfall bundle at #56.

You can't even find the AC:U XB1 bundle in top 100, that's how much they have sold.

Why would Sony do a price cut, when the PS4 is still selling just fine without it? MS is only dropping the price so low because it's more out of desperation than anything. I can't see them NOT losing immense amounts of money from the advertising and selling each system at a loss.

I doubt MS is sacrificing the kind of money on X1 Sony sacrificed on PS3. Sony was losing hundred of dollars on each unit sold and had to do price cuts almost year after year.

They were losing billions even while PS2 and PSP were selling in droves.

pure speculation based on nothing but your bias, nice.
But by all means, do go on and dig up old m&l / isupli guestimates from 2006.

Anything I said is well beyond speculation, go do your own research.

Ultimately, I feel Sony could do more to keep X1 sales down. But I'm glad Sony doesn't, I'd like to see multiple consoles thrive.

No, they didn't get cocky. They're still dominating Europe and doing well in N. America. They won't price cut until they are forced to which doesn't look to happen soon.

Sony's striking back with bundles. and look at this week sales, even with Sunset and Halo TMCC, X1 hasn't reached PS4 sales...

Sony only needs a few bundles for this holiday and after in 2015 with the exclusive games for ps4 it will be the end for the xbox One, the gap will be too big.

Again, I think this is the first generation where people are surprised a console manufacturer is losing money early on.

Money is one of MS's strength and they are taking advantage of it. In past generations money was a strength of Sony as well and that gave them an edge.

did you see the weekly sales?

Yep, the PS4 got outsold in the US just as expected after the price drop but it still nudged out a win worldwide.

That's good, but not something that will help the PS4 have PS2 like dominantance which, imo is what the industry needs.

No, the industry needs competition like any other industry.

Aaron Greenburg - "I don't believe the price cuts will impact the market dynamics too dramatically in the long term. We typically see a month or two of lifts and share adjustments, but then things tend to settle back to roughly the established market ranking."

Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360, told GameInformer the company acknowledges the PlayStation 3 will outsell the Xbox 360 for the month of September, but isn't concerned in the long run.

"It is not a real concern to us – in fact, I can tell you to that when NPD releases September sales later today, we fully expect PlayStation 3 will come in as the console with the most units sold for the month," Greenburg said.

"This is frankly not a real surprise to us or the analysts that follow this industry, as it is typical to see a short term bump following the introduction of new hardware and pricing into the marketplace. What I can tell you is we remain confident that Xbox 360 will not only outsell PS3 for the full calendar year, but for this entire generation."

"It is similar to a game of baseball, it is not about just winning one inning, but instead being able to win the game by consistently delivering across all nine innings," he added.

Selling at a loss in the begining has only really ever been common with Sony. Microsoft never once sold the 360 at loss, nor did they ever sell the original Xbox at a loss. Yes, Microsoft has money, but they've never been a company known for losing money on a product for too long before they just give up and end it (Zune, anyone?). It's kindof why they have all that money to begin with. I guarentee that they're not going to accept losing all this money for long if it continues to yield only decent results at best. Let's not forget that the PS4 STILL outsold XBone WW this past week despite XBone having so much favor. Right now, they're more or less capturing the impulse buyers who taking advantage of the temporary price drop. One the price goes back up after the holidays and CoD dust settles, they'll be right back to being far behind PS4.

Sony doesn't have to worry about money right now because the PS4 is still beasting as it has stood all year long, so they're still making money.

Sony should have followed the price cut to kill the XB1. The benefits on the long term would have been greater.
