I love the idea myself. If they can get the funds they need to support a huge AAA title every few years by doing more of the AA or A (or even mobile :p) games then more power to them. I just want those huge AAA games to be as good as the games of yesteryear.

I want a new Musashi! One that combines the charm of the first, art direction of second, and a smoother fluid combat system.

Can I just say, I miss Dragon Quest? We haven't had a single DQ since 9 and that was... 4-5 years ago. I'm extremely saddened by half done ports when we could be getting the real deal on 3DS. I mean, it isn't like DQ9 sold poorly as it did very well actually in the West. I hope we get some news at E3 2015.

Terrible plan. They failed at managing their own budgets and ran their company in to the ground and now they are switiching to making mobile phone games hoping for quick cash.

It wouldn't bother me at all if they were all to completely flop and Square Enix went bankrupt, in fact I may well enjoy their failure. Sad really, considering Square was and still is my favourite developer of all time. Square Enix are a far cry from Square

They aren't switching to anything, if you click on the link you'd see the mobile games are in addition to the major AAA games, they help bring in profits while development on AAA is going on.

Screw Mobile Market, its over saturated. Why not claim the virtual goldmine that is the AA market?

It is all about finding the balance. Japan is much more into mobility so it makes sense to answer the market demand. But there is also a huge demand worldwide for high quality Japanese games.
It is a little comforting that SE has established a new studio recently to focus on making console rpgs.

"If you’ve been following Square Enix’s evolution over the last decade or so..."

Evolution isn't the right word.

And I see nothing about localization of these Japanese projects. Please tell me I missed that part...!

I thought there was a DQ 10?

Well, actually because I'm so hurt, there's..

Dragon Quest X

Dragon Quest Monsters 1&2 3DS remakes

Dragon Quest VII 3DS

Dragon Quest Heroes will likely be skipped here too.

and it has been confirmed that Dragon Quests 11 and a New Monsters Game are in development.  Guess how many America got, NONE.

Mainline DQ games have been years apart for decades now, ever since the SNES days actually... in fact, ever since the franchise moved to PS1, there has been only one mainline entry every generation (with the exception of the last generation, if you do not dismiss X).

Anyway, frankly I don't see any other solution for SE. JRPGs have simply lost a big chunk of their popularity... even the most critically-acclaimed RPGs from the last generation (Lost Odyssey, Ni No Kuni and Xenoblade) were not able to do much. It doesn't make sense for a company to invest millions and millions in high-budget RPGs anymore, unless they are already established IPs (such as Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts).

Of course, this truth saddens me... I grew up playing RPGs and I miss how the market was flooded with RPG offerings from so many developers, but it is what it is. I just hope SE's selectiveness means better games this generation!
