Terrible plan. They failed at managing their own budgets and ran their company in to the ground and now they are switiching to making mobile phone games hoping for quick cash.

It wouldn't bother me at all if they were all to completely flop and Square Enix went bankrupt, in fact I may well enjoy their failure. Sad really, considering Square was and still is my favourite developer of all time. Square Enix are a far cry from Square

They aren't switching to anything, if you click on the link you'd see the mobile games are in addition to the major AAA games, they help bring in profits while development on AAA is going on.

Seems to imply less proper games though. If they didn't blow so much money on each game they could easily make more console games and have them be much more profitable.

Yes it does imply less AAA games since the AA games and mobile games are gonna take up some of the manpower.  It is true that FF15 is the reason KH3 isn't out yet and the relaunch of FF14 pretty much halted production on most other major projects.  They need to put more effort into the early stages of development instead of having to redo everything years down the line.

Can I just say, I miss Dragon Quest? We haven't had a single DQ since 9 and that was... 4-5 years ago. I'm extremely saddened by half done ports when we could be getting the real deal on 3DS. I mean, it isn't like DQ9 sold poorly as it did very well actually in the West. I hope we get some news at E3 2015.

Mainline DQ games have been years apart for decades now, ever since the SNES days actually... in fact, ever since the franchise moved to PS1, there has been only one mainline entry every generation (with the exception of the last generation, if you do not dismiss X).

Anyway, frankly I don't see any other solution for SE. JRPGs have simply lost a big chunk of their popularity... even the most critically-acclaimed RPGs from the last generation (Lost Odyssey, Ni No Kuni and Xenoblade) were not able to do much. It doesn't make sense for a company to invest millions and millions in high-budget RPGs anymore, unless they are already established IPs (such as Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts).

Of course, this truth saddens me... I grew up playing RPGs and I miss how the market was flooded with RPG offerings from so many developers, but it is what it is. I just hope SE's selectiveness means better games this generation!

That's the thing, Dragon Quest has proven to be different than the series you've mentioned. Ni No Kuni, Tales Series, Persona, all of them never do better than Dragon Quest in the west. It just doesn't make sense to me to not localize the games that have proven themselves and still have much more to proove. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and now Kingdom Hearts... along with Pokemon are the best selling JRPGS of all time. Dragon Quests 8 and 9 have both done 1.2M copies outside Japan and that never happened before in the series' past. To say that Dragon Quest isn't relevant is stupid when games like Bravely Default, Xenoblade, Etrian Odyssey, and so on get localized all the time and don't sell near as well as DQ could.

Oh, I didn't realize you were referring to localization. I agree with you! You need to remember though that the reason DQ8 did so well is because it was bundled with a demo of FFXII, while Nintendo paid for the entire marketing campaign of DQ9... SE probably think other titles wouldn't do as well without such factors. I'm not surprised that they did not port the Monsters titles, but I really did expect them to port the VII remake, considering that they ported all the mainline DS remakes back in the day. In any case though, I really do hope they start localizing more titles like they used to in the DS days...

Dumb as fuck. SE is slowly strangling itself to death.

Square Enix did this to themselves, I miss Square.

See, that kind of stuff just doesn't make sense to me. I don't hear any other developers of a comparable size having problems like that. Do they not have enough staff or something? Or do they just us far too many people on each project?

They just don't seem to be very organised, could learn a lot by looking at some smaller studios.

From what I've learned in the early stages of development FFVersus 13 had a very small team working on it and didn't really pick up development until years later and then they took people off that team to help with the FF14 relaunch.  I think 1. they announced the game way too early, probaby when they first started development and 2. there should have been a full team there from the start.

After the new director took over, I forgot his name, he said it took 2 years to get 60% of the game done.  This leads me to believe maybe tetsuya nomura was the problem?  On one hand he never had any trouble with the KH games, but on the other this was a much larger project and maybe his vision was too large for his own good.  Anyway it looks like the game is on the right track now and will be out by 2016, maybe late 2015 if they pull a FF14 and halt production on everything else to get it done.

Well the sad part is that I was the guy who got DQ8 just for FFXII demo and I actually played throught the whole game. FFXII didn't even want to be played in my mind anymore. That was when I saw the potential of Dragon Quest as it was very different and magical... like FF once was. Dragon Quest 9 was still a success any way you slice it. Nintendo didn't report any losses because of that game as DS was still printing cash. To be honest, the DS ports were utter jokes and that's coming from a DQ fan. I appreciate what they brought to the table but the newer remakes and new games are putting those to shame. I'd skip all those DS remakes just for 1 hour of Dragon Quest VII 3DS in translated form. If other companies can release games like Y's, and the ones that I've mentioned earlier, I see no risk in the localization of Dragon Quest VII and the monsters titles. Heck, Dragon Quest X could be massive if they'd market it correctly. I don't really care much for DQX but there's a glimmer of hope for me. There was mention that Dragon Quest XI is being planned for a western release and I believe it will be for PS4.

Whatever helps them sleep at night. I'm not complaining as long as I'm getting my main FF fix regularly.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I hope in their medium budget games they will include parasite eve, star ocean and valkyrie profile sequels.

Wow, their old plan was terrible. The management must have been idiots at the time.
