I'm sure this has been asked multiple times, but bear with me: How do you catch people with alternative ID's? And do the original people get perma-banned for them?

We use magic! That and a bit of detective work, and a bit of IP checking. A whole host of things really; I used a post on VizionEck to catch an alt last week!
Original accounts can and have been perma'd for alts, yes.

Thank you! So if someone had a hypothetical alt that didn't cause any issues and they've only posted a few times, would the mods still want that banned?

That's right. One account per person! Some more high-profile users have an alt for talking to mods via PM only whilst banned; but posting in the forums is an absolute no-no. Can lead to doubling your ban length.

I think anyone who breaks the quote tree rule should be banned asap.

I said some, not all. Just because you have an alt, doesn't make you a high-profile user.
My second ban was ridiculous. I stated a fact and I got banned. The first one I can see why, but the second one was uncalled for.
That's a long, long list.
