You might even get death threats, that's also not just a concern for women.

So why oh why is this all of a sudden a news worthy womens issue?

No one is saying men don't also get harassed online.

But women are definitely disproportionately targeted by online harassment. They also often are the targets of misognyistic comments, sexual harassment, threats of violence, and threats of sexual violence.

Trying to address this issue shouldn't be controversial.

Is it really disproportiante? What about other minority groups? Where are the calls to protect gays online? Or black people? Why is it a news worthy story if it's women but not when it's other groups? Better yet, why isn't it news when it's anyone at all? Why are death threats against women worse than death threats against men?

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I don't do a lot of online gaming, but when I do generally when someones being a massive prick, either I or someone else will give him crap for it. I'm also sick of so many people treating women like they're fragile, helpless creatures that'll shatter like fine China at a few errant words. Most girls I've played with give as much as they take, just like everyone else.

Could gamers be a more friendly and welcoming bunch? Absolutely. And some communities are. However, making a huge fuss about so called "misogyny" in the games industry while painting everyone with a broad brush and trying to institute(force) change on a massive scale is only going to give the common offenders a persecution complex and cause them to feel justified in their own douchebaggery.

A human is a human, on most terms, deal with it broettas. Leave the site, bite back, cry, whatever helps.

Men kind should start calling themselves Human Kind, when that day come women would not need protection.

You freaking kidding? What about the rampant homophobia and racism that is incredibly more prevalent than trolling women (half the time it's just horny teenagers coming onto them, not an attack on their "minority" status) ??

Young gay men are the highest among suicide rates, not women.

While I think you underplay the actual harassment towards women online, you definitely have a point. Anyone who isn't a straight white male teenager will face discrimination and harassment over who they are when playing online games, but it's because of outside factors that these people are morons.

In terms of what video game companies should do, it would be hard to monitor every single person and what s/he says as well as an invasion of privacy, but there should be something done. I wish I knew what it was.

I totally disagree with that.  The majority of insults that I see are from (presumably) straight white men against other straight white men.  Just look at any console / fanboy thread.

The gaming community hates everyone equally. You either grow thick skin or get beat into submission.

I've been harassed by groups of blacks and latinos over PSN because I'm white and speak limited Spanish.

I couldn't agree more.
