Forums - Gaming - Framerate issues that seemingly add to the feel of a game

Driver 2.

Eventually you could learn to predict and counter the horrific frame rate. It is part of the gameplay.

I would prefer them to just kick in slow motion rather than have a framerate issue. No I never had his feeling. Hell I don't even notice most frame drops except in ME2 and TWD which didn't add anything.

This reminds me of space invaders but in reverse. The aliens all start out slow and gradually speed up as they are killed off, but that dynamic wasn't by design initially. It happened because the number of enemies on the screen at the start overwhelmed the cpu, so as you killed them off it freed up memory which sped up the aliens thus making the game harder and more interesting.

I didn't know that, that's really awesome.

So basically, rather than contributing anything to the discussion, you feel that the most appropriate thing to do is to mock me and, it seems, some other people for having a different perspective from yours?

I did the most construtive post to the thread.

Framerate drops are bads and don't add nothing to the game... slow motion happenes at the framerate of the game (30 or 60fps)... there is no drop to make the slow motion effect.

I know how you feel lol, it's like looking  of people arguing which illegal drugs is good for your health. and you trying to explain non of drugs is good for  health. Lol :D

maybe some people need some explanation what is slow motion and what is frame rate drop :D.

Actually, this situation is more like some people asserting that all drugs reduce your level of awareness, and when someone points to drugs like caffeine, you go "that's not a drug".

I'm sure there are games where framerate drops don't reduce the speed of the game, and instead just reduce the clean-ness of the video. But some games slow down when the frame rate drops. I'd guess that the distinction has to do with whether the slowdown is in the GPU or the CPU (in simplistic terms) - whether it's the graphical display process that is struggling, or the game underneath. But it's still a framerate drop, because the framerate decreases. It is not in any sense an intentional slow motion (which would have a consistent framerate), but a slowdown related to a framerate decrease.

On a side note, it's sad that you think that a drug being illegal necessarily means that it's bad for everybody's health. See marijuana, which has extensive health benefits as well as negatives (not unlike caffeine, or sugar for that matter).

Amazing how some fans force them to like anything that comes from their favorite company.

Just to be clear...

Slow motion (to look more cinematic and all) is different from framerate drop... the slow motion happens at the actual framerate wothout any drop.

Like I said... some guys like to well date some ugly things.

Actually he stated facts relevant to the topic. It seems you're the one that doesn't want any realy "discussion" unless it's inline with your thoughts.

That being said I can understand how frame rate drops could add to the feel of a game in certain situations, possibly in hyrule warriors though I haven't played it myself. However this will always be inferior to an intentionally programmed slow motion feature which will continue running at a consistent 60/30 frames per second and only happens when the developers intend it to.

Personally I can't remember ever coming across a game where the frame rate drops added to my experience, but I'm sure they can.

One of the greatest framerate drops I remember is from Thunder Force 4 on the MegaDrive. It is in of of the earlier stages, under water. Equipped with the blade weapon, I started shooting at these enemies that immediately started to multiply! The game slowed down and I could still navigate through the swarm of multiplying enemies on-screen. Oh, those wonderful memories. So yes, sometimes it adds to not only gameplay but the overall memory of the game.

Yeah, I'm sure that by replying to somebody he was agreeing with, mocking those who disagreed with him, and dismissing the entire topic of the thread, HollyGamer is indicating a desire to have a discussion about a phenomenon that clearly isn't just me, given the responses by other people. And I'm sure Ethomaz's insistence that he was contributing is sincere, even as he claims absolute fact about something that is obviously inherently subjective (not to mention that he believes that beauty isn't really in the eye of the beholder, just that people other than him are sometimes attracted to ugly)

What is relevant to the topic is that framerate issues can, for some people, contribute to the feel of the game. Essentially, the observation I was making with this thread was that, sometimes even unintentional slowdown (which exhibits in the form of a framerate issue) works to create the effect that is sometimes done deliberately, and it can be the only context in which the slowdown occurs (and thus the fact that it's unintentional is irrelevant).

Indeed, the thread has already paid off on a number of fronts. Not only did it reveal a case where the effect was cool in a kind of reversed way (Space Invaders), but it has also identified a number of different contexts in which this can happen. My own example of Hyrule Warriors identified the most obvious case - adding a sense of grand-ness to a moment at which you are killing a particularly large number of foes, and the game slows down while processing it all. Puppyroach above me here and Norris2k before him mention examples of the slowdown happening where it feels like the weight of the world is crashing down on the player, but the player can still persevere. Sterner noticed an example of a case where a game feels worse when run on better hardware, because this effect isn't at play. Sentient_Nebula noted that explosions in cinematics sometimes push the system a bit too far, causing some slowdown... and it helps to add the "cinematic" feel to it.

And it's worth noting that the fact that it's a framerate drop rather than a directly-coded slowdown doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't left in intentionally. It's possible that it was playtested with the framerate drop, as well as with a reduced graphical quality to make the framerate stable, and they found the framerate drop effect was contributing, as per this thread, to the feel of the game - kind of like Space Invaders. I'm sure they would have tested the game with a correction to compensate for the speedup as memory demands decreased... and decided that they preferred it with the speedup. Basically, turning a glitch into a feature.

And this is why I assert that Ethomaz and HollyGamer are not just wrong, but are also essentially flaming people while posting what amounts to off-topic content.
