Great Q for PS4 and the gaming division but holy crap those phone losses! Without them their operating income would've been positive.

Fantastic ps4 shipments. 13,5M shipped (against 7,5M X1 and 7,25M WiiU) estimated sales for end september could be 12,2M ps4 6,5M X1 and 7M WiiU (using rounded numbers with healthy stock in the channel, bigger for ps4 that is in more markets and sells more, big for X1 because of release in new territories that could create some overstuffing the channel plus holiday preparation and low WiiU because of dismall sales) we will now for sure on jan-march shipping figures for holidays replenishing.

On this number we have 13.5M for ps4 x 14.75M for WiiU/X1 or 47.78% marketshare. With ps4 needing extra 1.25M shipments to achieve this will be achieved this quarter.

For sold we have 12.2M against 13.7M or 1.5M to achieve 50% could be done around (after) Black Friday.

For this year we have 8M PS4 sold versus 3M X1 and 2M WiiU (round estimative) or 61.5% 23% 15.5% marketshare and Ps4 2.5+ - 1 X1 and 4-1 to WiiU and X1 1.5-1 WiiU and Ps4 1.6-1 WiiU+X1.

This will be a hot Holiday season with X1 achieving second place for good and Ps4 getting half the market probably growing marketshare until the end of gen.

On the other numbers ridiculous loss on phones, cut unprofitable lines, it isn't like you are making ton of Money on the rest to justify loss by gaining customer awareness.

All other defined departments proffiting with financial services being first as always (for as much sense as this do on a company on such financial situation) and GNS in third for a small difference so I expect it to be second on Q3 and a lot closer to first. Ps4 will bloom on holidays.

No profits for 5 of the last 6 years, and 9 of the last 10.

1.3 Billion lost last year.
6.7 Billion lost in 2012.

And they sold the entire lot of Sony City in Japan. If you've been to Japan you know why that's so crucial.

2005-20011 = Seven years without a profit confirmed by Kaz Hirai himself.

"Management is feeling a serious sense of crisis about the seven years of losses," said Executive Deputy President Kaz Hirai.

Anyone who thinks this company has a future is lying to themselves.

I'm taking away two (2) things from this;
holy shit, PS4 is beasting like it's nobody's business
holyshit, what's up with their mobile division?! That shit is bleeding them dry... seems like they've got everything else under control, but what will they do about mobile?!

Yeah, it's really quite shocking how badly the mobile division is doing. Take that out and they'd be profitable.

I wonder what theyll do about it... this shit cant go on.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

........ The only thing that is going to get them in the green is a successful smartphone...... The PlayStation brand is basically barely breaking even.. They can't keep ps4 399 forever..

£123 million profit = barely breaking even?

Thats not a big profit given the current state of play.  We have been lead to believe each playstation4 is profitable, clearly the PS3 is profitable, the Vita is irrelevant as investment has stopped there, so why such modest profits?

123m?  thats actually quite a small number for a large company.

Maybe, its still $US200 million in one quarter. Even with profitable hardware, the majority of profit is made on software and this early on even with the very successful sales the PS4 install base is still small. Its actually impressive that software revenue increased YoY given the rapid slowdown in PS3 in general. The big thing is how quickly the profitability is improving within the gaming segment. That implies that though the PS4 is generating modest profit at the moment (because of its small install size), as that install size increases profitability should continue to increase as SW and network sales improve, above and beyond what PS3 was able to achieve.

I don't think gaming will ever be able to uphold a company as large as Sony by itself, but once Sony get through their protracted restructuring, the fact that most divisions are now profitable should lead to a recovery.

And seeing 13,5M shipped in 11 months (plus made prior to launch) ltd and 9M shipped in 9 months Ytd it seems ethomaz determination on 1M monthly production was really accurate at the time (so maybe we are already at 1.5M/month capacity??? Plus not shipped and waiting on Sony warehouse for holidays).

And if Q3 = Q 1,2,4 as the rule of thumbs here (or oct-dec equals jan to sept) that would mean crazy 9M shipped or 8M sold giving totals like 20,2M sold and 22.5M shipped mindblogging numbers. How close will ps4 make to it?
Sony keeps lowbailing and overachieving home consoles forecast and the opposite with smartphones. When will they recover from their idiocy? 9,4M for ps4+3 in next 6M will be childs play for Sony.

Smartphones cut again to 41m from the 43m and previous 50m.

suprised that they cut it with just 2 million.. with the rate that the chinese smartphone makers are on the rise it still optimistic from Sony. Great specs, good design and most importantly affordable prices.. they can't compete with that .. At least they replaced their mobile chief..

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Its unfortunate that the keep bleeding money. But I think they need to buckle down even more and just cut off anything that is bleeding money for them. And even though they make really good phones, the unfortunate thing is that they don't seem to be ready to take that as seriously as they should. They weren't even making deals with carriers up until the Z3. Meaning that before now if you wanted an Xperia phone you had to pay full price all at at once.
