Forums - Gaming - Which video game series have left the biggest legacies? How have they?

Yes, but without Mario ther wouldn't be a console industry after the video game crash of 1983- ever heard of that one? We would all be gaming on PCs now if it weren't for Mario and Nintndo.

try harder

If they didnt do it Sega would have, if not them then some one else at a later date.  If Apple didnt pull of the smart phone someone lese would have.

I guess you are the type that thinks if not for henry ford we be rolling on horse pulled buggies still and if not for the wright brothers we would have never flown.

lol

I can't believe people forgot that Resident Evil popularized the survival horror genre and zombie games. Too bad that it's so far from it's origins.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

Going by influence they had on games to come I'd probably go with Doom, since it rocketed FPS genre and Ultima and Wizardry for their influence on both cRPGs and jRPGs.

We both know that GAMES sell consoles, and did Sega have the games neccessery to sell their system? Not until Sonic, and he was designed to compete directly with Mario. Apple would never have ventured into console bussines unless it was lucrative, and who made it a lucrative busniess again? Nintendo.

And consider this; would anyone really have tried to revive the console market if the PC gaming scene had grown big enough? No, they would have made PC games insetad. Sony would never have made a console, Microsoft would never have made a console

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Mario. This isn't opinion. It's objective reality. Super Mario Bros. is probably the single most important game ever released. After the Crash of '83, the console industry was knocking on death's door. Then came the NES. Nintendo's first console was hugely popular and single-handedly revived the console industry, and it attained its popularity primarily through SMB, which was the original pack-in game for the system. While there were other games early in the NES's life, none were nearly as huge as SMB. In addition to being the game that made the system that saved gaming, SMB also established the platformer as a mainstream genre, a genre that would diversify and proliferate, becoming the dominate genre for two consecutive generations. Several years later, SMB3 would prove to be the most anticipated new game of the 20th century. It was the best-selling game not originally bundled with a system until GTA: San Andreas unseated it 15 years later. The Super Mario franchise has generated more sales than any other game franchise, and every bit of those sales were highly deserved.

Other influential games include:

- Pong, the first commercially successful arcade game
- Space Invaders, which took the arcade industry to new heights and kick-started the Golden Age of Arcades
- Pac-Man, which in addition to being insanely popular introduced the concept of the mascot character as well as cutscenes and power-ups
- Street Fighter II, which popularized fighting games
- Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, which set the standard for JRPGs. Final Fantasy VII was also the game that made the PlayStation popular; sales were slow in the U.S. (and possibly Europe) until FFVII was released.
- Doom, which popularized first-person shooters, and, along with Mortal Kombat, was responsible for the ESRB coming into existence.
- Halo, which, in addition to making Xbox a household name, redefined shooters and is responsible for codifying mechanics that are now genre standards. Halo 2 also popularized online gaming on consoles.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I would also add The Legend of Zelda, for laying the groundwork for non-linear action-adventure games in particular and most modern games in general; Ultima, for successfully translating the tabletop role-playing game to home computers; and Grand Theft Auto III, for popularizing and codifying the open-ended sandbox game.

The BIGGEST legacy?

Mario, hands down. Nothing else comes even close. But Zelda, GoldenEye, Halo, Street Fighter, GTA and more have left a pretty big impact as well.

Really, seeing how plaftormers are mostly dead id didagree.

Wolfi or Doom set literallythe biggest legacy, and their legacy rules todays gaming world not Marios.

Lol. Platformers have had a MAJOR resurgence. The Wii U is a platform machine. Sony's holiday game this year is a platformer. The indie industry, arguably the most important part of the games industry now, is platformers by a majority.

Mario Bros 1 saved the console industry on top of popularising gaming and the platform genre. (it doesnt matter that sega or someine else "could" have saved it, they didnt. Other games woukd have done the same thing Doom did if it didnt exist, so those arent that influencial either, to use your wierd logic.)

Mario 64 helped set the standard for all 3D games, not just platformers. The guys who made GTA 3 talked about how M64 helped them.

Mario is tge best sellung francise and Mario Galaxy got called ""Game of the Generation"" by more than 2 websites.

Tryung to undercut Mario's influence is a bit ridiculous. I knew ine person in this thread would though.

Henry Ford never made cars popular, he just made then easier to make. But the thing is, Mario did singlehandedly revived the console market, so without him, both Sony AND Microsoft would have never entered the console market. And Sega had a terrible CEO who wpuld have never restarted the gaming market.

By genre:

Platformer (2D & 3D):

Super Mario Bros.- redefined the 2D genre and popularised console gaming again
Mario 64 - Perfect translation of 2D Mario into the third dimension
Tomb Raider - One of the first 3D platforming games with complex puzzles and mature atmosphere. Franchise has evolved with the times.
Prince of Persia - Original was a 2D masterpiece, but the reboot redefined 3D platforming. Influenced the popular Assassins Creed and Tomb Raider franchises.

FPS:

Wolfenstein - created the genre
Doom - popularised the genre
Half-Life - redefined the single player FPS (e.g. with actual AI and non-combat moments)
Unreal Tournament - showed a purely multiplayer focussed game could sell
Counterstrike - Showed users could create amazing games
Halo - Popularised the genre on consoles

jRPG:

Final Fantasy - Popularised the genre in the West

wRPG:

Elder Scrolls - showed completely free and open world RPGs could sell
Fallout - the first two influenced the genre and the latest games have updated them with a modern take
Deus Ex - demonstrated how combining storyline branching and skill progression of a wRPG with aspects from other genres could work

Grand Theft Auto
The legend of Zelda
Mario

Need I say more ...

YES

Metal Gear Solid
Halo

A wild old gamer dog that knows what's up appears!

I agree with this, especially the Mario part, besides the influence on platformers as a genre one has to consider the impact this franchise had on the vitality of the entire industry at the time.
