Easily Devil May Cry.. DMC1 and DMC3 are among my favorite hack 'n slash games. The GoW games are still very fun though.

The "gods" are total weaklings. I'm pretty sure that in mythology, a Mortal can't kill a god. They got so many things in Greek mythology wrong as well.

Setting goes to God of War...mainly because I still barely even know what DMC's setting is.
Characters goes to DMC...if we can throw the reboot out. Neither game has a particularly strong, but old Dante sticks out to me as a lovable goofball who will be sorely missed
Better original game is DMC
More evolving...was DMC...though that might go in GoW's favor
Personally, I prefer the DMC games. Even though 2 and reboot were disasters, DMC1 and 3 were masterpieces, and none of the GoW games really stuck out to me as anything more than button mashers

I don't think so, it's just that Kratos is equal to or more powerful than anyone or anything opposing him, the Gods all put up a fair fight.
Remember Kratos isn't a mere mortal, he's a demigod, the son of Zeus himself. Also throughout the series it's the Gods & Titans who aid Kratos, giving him powers & items, saving him from death, giving him advice etc. Naturally with all that help if anybody could kill Gods and Titans, it's Kratos.
Once you stop being uptight about its accuracy in relation to the source material and accept that the story is just a contemporary fantasy loosely based on Greek mythology, it becomes a lot more enjoyable.
It's a 'what if' alternate version of Greek mytho, the Gods loved to bully and torment mortals, what if one day the Gods messed with the wrong 'mortal' and as a result of their hubris they created the very force that would ultimately bring an end to the tyrannical rule of the Olympians.
Just my two pennies' worth. :)
AAaaarrreeess!!!
Sorry, just wanted to yell that. I don't have much experience with either franchises but I find the discussion interesting.
Game play and SKILL required (plus better/competent enemies/bosses)..... no contest..... DMC 1&3>>>> any GOW.
Story? serious vs humour........ no winner here for me.
Devil May Cry > God of War for me.
60fps goes a long way, and I could at least tolerate Dante as a character.

It's not just the inaccuracy that I hate about it, but the fact that he hates the gods for making him kill his wife, yet has sex with every woman he sees like they're hookers. It boggles my mind how Kratos would betray his wife like that.
