Forums - Gaming - Vita autopsy: What Went Wrong?

What was the biggest reason for the Vita's failure?

Not enough advertising 37 11.04%

Not enough games 89 26.57%

Too expensive (Including memory cards) 96 28.66%

The 3DS was just too mighty 73 21.79%

Other 40 11.94%

Total:335

Oh my... I never intended for the discussion to get this fierce...

No big game release is the reason why the Vita ended up this way ...

Untrue. The system literally LAUNCHED with a fantastic Uncharted title and continued to receive major AAA initiatives from old IPs (Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Assassin's Creed, Persona, CoD (albeit not a very good game), etc.) and new IPs (Tearaway, Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice) in addition to unprecedented indie support, robust integration with the PS3 and even more so with the PS4. Simultaneously, it has unprecedented indie support and intense support from the niche Japanese games sector.

Games are not and never were the Vita's struggle. In fact, Vita owners continue to buy more games per system than what is done on any other system.

The Vita's library has become more niche over time, but this is in response to the sales, not the cause of the sales.

Freedom wars is the latest in a long time. Sony should have supported it more. 1886 should be a vita game not a ps4 one. Coming from a vita owner

Ltd predictions by the time 9th Gen comes out

Ps4:110million

Xbox one :75 million( was 65)

Wii u: 20 milliion

My Freedom Wars pre-order arrives tomorrow. :3

Ignoring the Vita aspect entirely and just focusing on The Order: 1886 for a moment... Ready at Dawn have been dreaming of making this game for over a decade. They had it planned that long ago and have been waiting for the hardware to catch up. For them, the PS4 was that moment. So maybe you think Ready at Dawn should be making a Vita game, but it would probably be something other than The Order: 1886. Perhaps another God of War.

The iPhone sure didn't kill the Vita, but it is one of the reasons it died. The biggest reason the Vita struggles today is because of a lack of support, and Sony's unwillingness to actually promote the console. The Vita could do better in Japan than it does now, but there isn't any major support for it.

Games are the biggest problem. Too many ports, not enough must have exclusives.

Insane memory-card prices and Sony completely misjudged what people wanted from a handheld.

Indeed, they thought there were gamers out there who wanted a handheld.

I'm not saying it wouldn't have suffered, i'm saying that it could be doing better than it is, regardless of market erosion (e.g. factors Sony can't control).

In terms of factors Sony *can* control, Vita could be doing better. PSP-esque games would certainly help in that regard.

This.

If market erosion was the only reason Vita failed then the 3DS would be selling just as badly.

Sony can't escape blame here, they  definitely could have done a better job.

No older teenager or adult would be caught dead carrying around a gaming handheld today.

About half the people I see with a 3DS in public are adults.

its a portable ps3 thats what happened.

in the U.S. it'll fail to outsell the Game Gear and will likely be the worst-selling piece of hardware from a major game company since the Saturn.

Ouch. So the worst selling piece of hardware in the US for the last 3 generations.
