Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Will Lock Your Wii U If You Don't Agree To The New License Agreement

I glanced through it, and the article makes much ado about nothing.

"After WiiU System is updated (..) any (..) unauthorized modification (..) renders the system permanently unplayable." means exactly that. Nowhere does that imply your system will get blocked solely by declining this agreement like the title says, but rather when you engage in illegal activities with the hardware.

You think your system will turn to black immediately after pressing 'decline'? Of course not. What if you did that by accident? You'll instead get the chance to agree later on, althewhile certain features will not work because they needed the updates.

In Europe Nintendo would have a hard time doing that anyway, blocking your system just for declining, because it would probably be illegal for them to do so, and EULA's are lawfully extremely shaky in the first place.

@ka-pi: What does this anti-piracy act have to do with DRM?

Glance again:

"In this case, as opposed to others, the system itself becomes unusable if you don't want to accept the EULA. In most other cases, such as a PlayStation update, declining the EULA would result in not being able to play online or get updates until you accepted, but all offline functionality, such as playing physical games, would be untouched. This part in particular is what's hitting a bad note with gamers. Those uncomfortable with agreeing to the EULA now have an E-Reader that only displays one book."

I can't say if it's true or not though, as I agree to the terms everytime!!

Yeah I just edited the post... Watched the video, and okay only being able to press 'agree' or do nothing at all is pretty weird I agree .

That wouldn't fly here.

Good thing I had no plans to pirate games on my Wii U.

At least Microsoft publicly announced when they had evil DRM plans and didn't try and sneak in it the back door. Disgusting!

Well... Piracy is bad... And if you pirate (and get caught), then you have to face the consequence... And to be honest, I am sure there will be hacks out there to prevent locks such as this and also to unlock a locked system so its mostly eh. And if you don't pirate/hack it, then you have nothing to worry about... Heck, unless you are a complete noob, one of the first rules of piracy is don't connect the console to the internet if you are pirating and I am guessing thats the only way they will be able to lock it

And its not really that unheard of.. If you go against Valve's terms and services, they will ban your account and delete all your games! (Same with Sony and MS) Although, I guess locking your whole system is going a bit far

The thing is, the law really hasn't decided to take a look at all this stuff. I'm pretty sure that if it did, the courts would deny any company the ability to destroy someone elses property. Sure, you techincally license games. But the console? Nintendo has no ownership at all and I'm pretty sure legally, killing it would violate laws.

It's only a matter of time before things like this get the attention they need in court. Hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.

That sounds like a mild punishment in proportion to the display of such monumental stupidity.

That is very anti consumer if true. Xbox and PS have these kind of updates once in a while as well. But you CAN disagree with them should you have a problem with it. Online won't be available anymore, but the console will still work.

Still don't see what's the problem.. most pirates buy a console twice, one for legitimate playing and the other for personal modding purposes. You have to be extremely stupid to connect a modded console to the internet.

Well, the big N really wants you to play nice with the Wii U. I don't see a problem with that.
