Forums - Gaming - Has Naughty Dog put themselves on a lose-lose situation?

Ever since Crash Bandicoot, ND has been on an unbelievable streak. Not a single one of their games since then has been considered bad.

I would disagree with that. I think Jak 2 and Uncharted 1 are bad games....and Uncharted 3 was just okay.

So no, I think the TLoU-people who are now in charge of U4 ...and are clearly talented... have every opportunity in the world to impress the public with their work.

Naughty Dog will be fine. They always manage to deliver great games.

I think they will be fine because they really are a great studio. Uncharted 3 and TLOU had a giant hype machine and people's expectations were not only met but exceeded. So worst case scenario is that UC4 will be a really good game that sells very well.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Because Jak X is such a masterpiece

Not really the point I was trying to make to be honest. I was saying it'll still get GOTY nods but the score won't be as high as The Last of Us. I'm not criticizing the game for it, it's just likely to happen.

Didn't think you were criticizing it :) Just thought it was kind of a lofty expectation to have is all :D

Squaresoft released FFVII, FF Tactics and Xenogears in just over a year time.
Now thats a peak in performance they never managed to achieve again. And thats understandable of course.
We got spoiled back then.

ND takes their time to deliver great games.
They probably will work on uncharted 4 until its good enough to live up to its name.

''Hadouken!''

As long as the people don't change too drastically I doubt they will have much trouble. Its like looking at the Mona Lisa and being like "This is fucking great, but da Vinci really screwed himself ay, he's in a lose lose situation now so his next painting has to be shit because he can't live up to hype".

News flash that's not how art works. ND has become masters of the craft and what they have been making, like it or not is art. Sure not everyone will get it or like it but that doesn't matter. Fact is they make games they like and enjoy, and so far they have shown they have good taste. They aren't like some devs that constantly rotate people in order to save money. They have a clear vision and strong leadership and dedicated teams. Which can't be said about other devs. Quality usually turns to shit when you constantly replace people or change devs completely like with Halo for example.

Luckily ND isn't doing that, so as long as they stay true to themselves, make games that they enjoy, and keep up with technology they will be fine.

Ever since Crash Bandicoot, ND has been on an unbelievable streak. Not a single one of their games since then has been considered bad. It all peaked with Uncharted 2, which took numerous GOTY awards (and U3 did the same later)...

...or that's what we thought until the release of The Last of Us, the most awarded game EVER. The praises for that game were unbelievable (and deserved, imo, but that's another story).

Now here's my question: with such an amazing streak of fantastic games, the hype over anything ND does will be ridiculously huge... so have they reached a point where it's impossible to live up to the colossal expectations? Will people be disappointed at U4 (and then the next game, and then next...) because it's "not as good as their previous works"? It's even worse that reviewers seem to be really picky lately. Granted, I haven't played any of these games, but stuff like Second Son, Driveclub or The Wonderful 101 seem to deserve more than 70-80 metas.

Sounds pessimistic, but the thought just crossed my mind today. What do you think?

I think Uncharted was being held back by the power of the PS3 not being enough to realize their dream for that game. Naughty Dog didnt want Uncharted 4 to be held back so they waited it out.  The PS4 will be more than enough power for thwat they want to accomplish.

I was disappointed by TLoU though and I wasn't alone in that sentiment. The biggest problem was the AI so I don't know about expectations being exceeded.

Thats perfectly fine. That games reception still wont change despite how you feel. Some of the most intelligent AI ive seen in a while in a game especially with the receptiveness to sound.
