I believe they strayed from their usual practices too much for the new 3ds, allowing people to change covers to a new look in particular.
When a kid scratches his/hers up, or a new model comes out with a design they like better, they can just buy a new cover rather than a whole new console

basically, ability to swap covers will hurt repeat sales in the future.

Japan first week sales...

N3DS: 70k

N3DS XL 164k (and sold out at alot of retailers!!!

Perhaps you missed it.

It still has zero bearing on my comment.

Oh but it does.

My comment was specifically about replaceable faceplates hurting sales in the future.

Tell me, how exactly do launch sales of the new systems compared to the old systems, that DO NOT have replaceable faceplates, have anything, at all, to do with it?

<edit>

Sorry, seems you are reffering to the normal sized N3DS when you say OG and NOT "OG" as in Original 3DS.

Still changes very little, so long as one of the versions has faceplates, it will impact sales.

never have i denied that, im talking about the HH over all, while your talking about one of 2 sku which happens to be much less popular thus me saying its not going to be as bad.

Edit: All i meant is you have a point, but since its the much less popular sku, it wont hurt the entire 3ds family as bad as it would if all had faceplates.

That said, nintendo makes more money off of these in a way, some people will buy 10-30 over the course of 3ds life which helps in $$$ for Nintendo :)

Launch sales aren't really a reliable indicator of how popular something will be over the course of time, it just shows that those wishing to make the switch are more likely the late teen to adult demographic, when a holiday period rolls around we are likely to see the true shift in sales when we hit the period in which theyre being bought primarilly as gifts.

even if it ends up a 50/50 split, it's still going to impact sales quite a bit.

hmm... Difficult call, I say >75millions, but 100 mill seems a bit high...

No, XL>>>Normal Size. it wont be 50/50 japan the biggest market says it'll probably be 70/30 or 80/20.

I doubt it will push the sales to 100m, but it will push the sales to 99999999 unit

:D :D :D , Ok seriously there is possibility but like every other members said it will be determine when the new handled is going to release, technology improvement wise, selling pattern, demand for knew handled, competitor inside or outside (tablet, and mobile gaming ).

My guess is Nintendo will introduce the next handled successor sooner and that will halt the 3DS sales to achieve 100M life times sales.

The answer is an absolute and obvious no. :|
