Forums - Microsoft - What if... Microsoft didn't make the Xbox?

Microsoft is the only console manufacturer who nine times out of ten seems to share that way of thinking.

I'm pretty sure that both Sony and Nintendo will agree with me on that too ...

Both companies have their own art styles for games. Microsoft doesn't. They can invest in outside games to fill in the gaps, but the primary games are internally made. Microsoft has been in the industry for three gens now and still hasnt figured out how to make a new IP that isnt a simulator with a homegrown company.

I think Gamecube would have sold more. I also think Wii would have been different, and not called the Wii. Online wouldn't have ruined things. Mass Effect would most likely never have been made

Lets see life without Xbox

No Hard Drives
No Achievements/Trophy
No Standard Online
Will be paying $900 for a Playstation
Lack of Multiplayer service quality
Dedicated servers wont be standard
No Rumble Triggers
No off site twin sticks controllers
Bungie will be a Mac or PC company.
Turn 10 and 343 wouldnt exist
Rare would have folded
Direct X12 and Cloud computing will be exclusive to PC

Sorry a world without Xbox will be $hit.

With all the things you added here MS could've just been an add on company if they were third party to the gaming industry in the same capacity as they were for Sega. LOL

MS pushing PC Games would be...................amazing.

Only games I buy from them are the old PC ones.........but those were mostly RTS' that a studio made but MS killed them off and now they don't exist anymore.
RIP Ensemble Studios.

Bungie might have made something I cared about again.

Rare would've in all likelihood been bougt by Activison, and who knows how that would turn out.

Online distribution and play on consoles is likely to have been five years behind or more.

Without the OG Xbox, Halo would have ended up being a PC/Mac series and likely far different from the series we got. With no console to support there would have been no motivation to buy Bungie. Fable would have been a PC title, Forza would never exist, and games that had been third-party exclusives for the Xbox would have likely come out for PS2 and/or GameCube. Rare may have stayed partnered with Nintendo as MS likely wouldn't have bought them out. Online gaming on consoles may not have been popularized without Xbox Live and Halo 2. With less competition the GameCube may have done a lot better, though it would still have been dominated by the PS2.

Finally, without the Xbox we wouldn't have had the 360, and the PS3 likely would have fared considerably better even had it still cost $500 at launch. Then again, the Wii may have done even better than it did as there were fewer choices and Nintendo was selling a system at half the PS3's cost. Alternately, with only a single competitor and the possibility of the GameCube faring better than it did, it's possible that Nintendo may have chosen to go with another conventional console sold at a more affordable price, perhaps more in line with the 360 in terms of specs and cost. Had Nintendo released a conventional console with full seventh-gen power at $100 less than the cheapest PS3 SKU, it may have drawn third parties back as the PS3 may have struggled even against this hypothetical "anti-Wii." As mentioned earlier, the fate of online gaming in the console space would still be up in the air; with no Halo 2 to prove how popular online gaming would be, it's possible online services would still be rudimentary in nature, and thus a great many series known for their online component may have been single player experiences only or limited to split screen multiplayer. Also, we can only guess what would have happened to games like Saint's Row and Dead Rising, which were released for the 360 when it was the only seventh-gen system on the market and were never ported to PS3. With no seventh-gen system in the period from Q4 2005 to Q3 2006, it's possible that many games released in that period might not have been made.

So, while the sixth generation would only look somewhat different, the seventh would likely have had a very different landscape, and consequently each subsequent generation would likely look increasingly more alien to our actual experience.

Finally someone who doesn't talk only about Rare and Halo. Forza is one of the greatest contributions of MS to the industry. But it wasn't only Forza. MS started to compete with the almighty Gran Turismo with other racing series: Sega GT and one of the best IPs of all time imo, the PGR. PGR was what MSR ever dreamed to be. What racing game had such a good car list as PGR1 and PGR2 at that time? And when Bizarre decided to move to multiplatform, they created Playground Studios, which now produces the best arcade-sim racing game. So, the contribution of MS is undeniable.

But I don't agree with the premise that GameCube would have sold a lot better. The Xbox sales would be mostly transferred to PS2, not to GC. PS2 and Xbox were much more similar consoles.

It's their fault when the publisher owns the developer or had an exclusive deal with them. When it's not, then it's not the fault of the publisher.

It makes absolutely no difference whether or not the publisher owns the developer or not ...

It's not the publisher's damn job to make the game! That's the studio's responsibility ...

Why is Turn 10 and 343 Industries able to push great games despite Microsoft owning them ?

If you truly believe that then wouldn't you agree that it's Sony doing more damage to their own studios than Microsoft currently is by releasing less than stellar games such as Killzone Shadow Fall and Driveclub ?

Yes, I agree.

Bet with Xander XT:

I can beat more games on his 3DS than he can on my PSVita in a month. Loser has to buy the winner a game on his/her handheld Guess who won? http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=193531

Me!

Life without xbox would quite simply be dire.

No online games, no first person shooters, no evolving UI (dashboard).

I wouldn't really be gaming today if it wasn't for MS.

Just a few thoughts, HardDrives were natural progression for the industry, hardly a Xbox invention. 'Standard Online'? Free would be better than paying any day and PC gaming would mean Online would be a must on any Sony or Nintendo consoles. And placement of analogue sticks is subjective what you think is good, I cannot fathom why.

Some of your other points are good, although I just think MS would still have games companies, they did before. It would just be making games and releasing them on both PC and the consoles.

Hmm, pie.
