Forums - Microsoft - What if... Microsoft didn't make the Xbox?

Life without xbox would quite simply be dire.

No online games, no first person shooters, no evolving UI (dashboard).

I wouldn't really be gaming today if it wasn't for MS.

So MS created the FPS genre and online games?  wow, I never knew that one..

lol people really think Sony wouldnt have made PSN if it wasnt for xbox?

Under the same logic PS+ wouldnt be required to play online if it wasnt for XBL.

Lets see life without Xbox

No Hard Drives
No Standard Online
Lack of Multiplayer service quality
Dedicated servers wont be standard
No off site twin sticks controllers

Sorry a world without Xbox will be $hit.

Just a few thoughts, HardDrives were natural progression for the industry, hardly a Xbox invention. 'Standard Online'? Free would be better than paying any day and PC gaming would mean Online would be a must on any Sony or Nintendo consoles. And placement of analogue sticks is subjective what you think is good, I cannot fathom why.

Some of your other points are good, although I just think MS would still have games companies, they did before. It would just be making games and releasing them on both PC and the consoles.

Agreed. Last I checked, there was a console called the Dreamcast which allowed users to surf the web and play games online. OG xbox was not the first to include the ability to play online but it did do it better than Sega did which is understandable considering OG Xbox came out years after. Off-site analogue sticks being better is purely subjective, I prefer the symetrical style of the Dual Shock. Microsoft did do alot for bringing online gaming to prominence, but they were not the genesis of it. Including a hard drive was theirs though, Sony should have really had a built in hard drive from day one on the PS2. The over priced 8mb memory card was an absolute joke...

Of course we would have had Halo!! did people forget it was ORIGINALLY developed as a PC game? or has amnesia set in? :-p

We would have it, but would it as big as it is today?

IMO, it could have been bigger. Back in the day they were talking about opening it up to alow Mods! That would have been awesome.  I think the story mode would not have suffered so much as it seemed that was dropped for MP... I hated Halo 2 it was a slap in the face as far as single player goes! Never cared for Halo's MP.. maps just felt to small I was used to BF1942 at the time I liked bigger maps... Halo could have been so much more.

Bungie might have made something I cared about again.

Rare would've in all likelihood been bougt by Activison, and who knows how that would turn out.

Online distribution and play on consoles is likely to have been five years behind or more.

Destiny would've been out long ago and on PC funded by Apple most likely. Microsoft held them back really badly. People are going to really have to wait to realize the promise that they say exists in that game.

There would've been online and shooters. Online just would've evolved slower and much like with the Dreamcast they would've helped out from the outside.

If Microsoft didn't release a console and it was only Sony and Nintendo, then the PS3 would have won over the Wii. The PS3 and 360 lost against the Wii because they were competing consoles with most of the same games and Sony lost a lot of its fans because the PS3 was too expensive while the 360 had a one year lead and a lot more exclusives early in the gen. Because so many more people owned a 360, it took such a long time for Sony to make a comeback because the more casual gamer types purchase the console that their friends own.

If Microsoft didn't release a console or dropped out after the original Xbox and it was just Sony vs Nintendo, the Wii would have still sold because of all the motion control hype, but all of those big third parties that were developing next gen games would have been only on PS3 and PC. PS3 would have sold more.

Online would be no where near where it's at today. Live was a massive innovation on how we play our games.

GameCube with rare games would havê sold more.
But still less than n64.
Ps2 would be a little higher than it sold.

But ps3 and Wii could be completely different from what they are.
Would ps3 be so powerfull? Would invest in online?
Wii would be so weak?
