Wii U Gamecube Controller Adapter only Compatible with Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Below is a quote from a Nintendo UK representitive to Eurogamer

"The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically - it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion."

This is disappointing, but what confuses me is that why it needs to be clarified that it doesn't work with Wii? Wii already has slots for GameCube remotes, am I missing something here?

Lets complain about this on Smash Bros Miiverse page!!!

Will still buy the adapter though because I only have 2 wiimotes and a GamePad. 20$ for three extra working controllers is a good deal.
