I can't play most 2D fighters with the regular GC controller because the D-Pad is too small. Though I do use the GC Pelican Retro Pad which is a rip off of the GC Hori Digital Pad. The Pelican Pad has a circular shield type D-Pad instead of the true cross D-Pad that the Hori has. But it's still a big and responsive D-Pad that works good if you're used to playing SFII on the SNES.

I use a third party controller from Mad Catz that is a bit smaller than the GC controller and has a much improved D-pad, plus sweat fighting grips that are super handy. I can't think of the name of it at the moment, but it's my favorite controller of all time. Unfortunately, the L trigger is messed up and is too trigger happy, but I don't need it for TvC or Smash. It'll be like reuniting with an old friend :)

I don't know how you can ever play a Fighting game with the GC pad, I think that's the worst pad for a fighting game in the history of gaming. I use this to play Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Wait for this instead...

I know this comes down to preference but to me the PS3/4's segmented D-Pad isn't best suited for fighters either.
Plus it says that that adapter might malfunction with future software updates. It will also probably eat your Wiimote batteries faster and it costs around $27 for just the single adapter.
For around the same price you can get a Japanese Wii Classic Pro without the above issues, and a better D-Pad (IMO). - http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002C1AUP0/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new

True but if you buy that adaptor, you can connect it to this:

The Fightpad for the PS3 is the best non-joystick pad out there. It has a wire so I think it uses less batteries...

I do hear good things about the SFxT pad though there's still a few D-Pad complaints with some saying the Hori Fighting 3 Pro has a much better D-Pad.
But one other thing to be cautious about is that some converters out there cause lag translating the foreign pad to the native system, and nobody wants that in a fighter.
For the Wiimote batteries I meant that some of these wired contollers (DS4 in particular) might have a higher power consumption since they were designed to be plugged directly into the USB port on the console/PC, rather than through a converter on a Wiimote.

I have two of these and I can vouch for their great D-pads.
