It's not at all clear if that's how they'll be used. In Smash, they work more like memory cards than like DLC codes. |
But they're main duty is to unlock stuff. So DLC. The memory card thing is another option.

I came here to say the same thing. As far as I know, the only information we have is that Captain Toad will support Amiibo. Nintendo hasn't released any detailed information on that functionality.

Er, how do you know what the "main duty" of Amiibo is, given that the only confirmed application of them is as a memory card thing?

Because the main description to the features is to boost and enhance your fighter in smash. Basically upgrading and unlocking perks. That's done in the likes of DLC normally, since this is paid and not unattenable in the game.

The fighters grow on their own. You don't enhance them with Amiibo. You store their data in your Amiibo. There's no upgrading or perks here, each Amiibo is a CPU-controlled fighter that you can carry around as a figure so it's not isolated to one system/save file.

I think the confusion seen in this thread is just further evidence that Nintendo needs to better explain exactly how Amiibo works and what it does. Nobody really seems to be 100% clear about it haha.

I think even Nintendo doesn't know for sure yet. That's why they plan to update it at a later date.

We don't know that yet. Until we know, don't spread lies please. So far, we know it acts as a memory card, that's it.
I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.
Here's something else they could have done:
"Captain Toad Treasure Tracker delayed in NA until 2015 for Amiibo implementation."
Something tells me a lot more people would be pissed off at that turn of events...and they'd definitely be expecting the Amiibo implementation to be a stellar and indispensable addition to the game (which it probably won't be).

I do remember an old interview where they explained that each Amiibo served two functions -- one was to store data, the other was to submit data. Most of the Smash Amiibos' memory is reserved for storing data, but there is a sort of "check" that identifies the Amiibo... I'm not explaining it well. But it sounds like if the Smash Amiibo are used for other games, all they will be able to do with those games is tell them "I am the Smash Mario Amiibo," not store data for them. But of course I expect to see a Captain Toad Amiibo made just for that game.
