I do remember an old interview where they explained that each Amiibo served two functions -- one was to store data, the other was to submit data. Most of the Smash Amiibos' memory is reserved for storing data, but there is a sort of "check" that identifies the Amiibo... I'm not explaining it well. But it sounds like if the Smash Amiibo are used for other games, all they will be able to do with those games is tell them "I am the Smash Mario Amiibo," not store data for them. But of course I expect to see a Captain Toad Amiibo made just for that game.
