Forums - Nintendo - Why is WiiU tracking down YOY in Japan?

When you consider the software outputs for the comparable periods

2013 Jan - September 21st

Pikmin 3
Game & Wario
New Super Luigi U
Lego City Undercover
The Wonderful 101

2014 Jan - September 21st

Wii Fit U
Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart 8
Hyrule Warriors
Bayoneta 2

Yet sales are down 405k vs 451k last year.

Surely 2014's line up should have made the WiiU sell better this year?

PS4, bad momentum in first year creating apathy towards the system this year, and smart devices.

I was trying to think of a reason but I seriously can't.

Wii U is doomed? That's the best I got.

John Lucas told us to "keep our eyes on Japan", this is where the revolution will start. Guess this is only more suspense before the Nitro kicks in yo.

Sigh, Its called the tax hike. Seriously... sales dive bombed after it kicked in, or did everyone forget that happened?

Jan - Feb 2013 can really still be considered part of Wii U's launch window. Wii U's launch in Japan wasn't all that bad -- it was the period afterward that defined Wii U as a failure.

I'd recommend breaking this down by quarter.

Q1 2013 would happen to be really healthy for Wii U in Japan following on launch momentum and release of Dragon Quest X and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Thereafter, practically nothing. Not much to interest the Japanese (or anyone else)

Do a comparison of Q2 Q3 2013 with that of Q2 Q3 2014 and it may show a very different narrative than the one Seece likes to push.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

You're missing the fact Dragon Quest X and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate launched Q1 2013 in Japan. Two mega franchises in Japan that are absent on the Wii U this year.

This is highly interesting. One might think this would get better when Smash arrives but Last Year Wii U had 3D world. So it's probably gonna be close? But that's kind of devastating considering the games of this year.
