Microsoft can still spend $2.5 billion on new games. Some time ago they already said they're spending a billion on X1 exclusives. Also, there isn't always a guarantee a new IP will be good even from an established studio. Have you heard about Destiny?

I would assume Mojang had plans for future projects, maybe even a sequel or big updates to Minecraft.

This purchase is so huge that there must be plans we aren't aware of.

I've heard about destiny. What about it?

Its a mediocre new IP.

People are often clamoring for new IPs and most are disappointing. We need old IPs to get better, like Destiny.

Yes, there is simply no way Microsoft would overpay for something because of bad planning:

Microsoft and aQuantive

Even the world's definitive serial acquirer occasionally makes mistakes. In 2007, on the heels of competitor Google making similar inroads, Microsoft purchased a digital marketing company named aQuantive. It cost $6.3 billion, a price justified because online advertising was supposed to be the hot new industry. Perhaps it was, but not to the extent that an interest in aQuantive warranted paying an 85% premium. That's how much Microsoft spent over aQuantive's market price at the close of trading that day. Meanwhile, the company's online advertising efforts continue to cost it $2 billion annually.

If I was a shareholder I would be so pissed at MS right now, if not when it becomes abundantly clear that they aren't making any money from the deal...

All that money and you do this, disappointing MS. Surely a better investment could have been found to splash the cash on?

so name some?

and pls dont say "found 50AAA games and studios"

There was already a thread on here, 20 AAA games or mincraft http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=190037&page=1# of course I commented that I would have thought that the cash would be better spent on 20 AAA games instead of minecraft. For me it's not about naming something else they can buy, still Capcom has been mentioned, currently has a market cap $1.09billion. Instead of splashing all that cash on minecraft I do think that a better investment would be for MS to create something themselves, like new IP's, invest more in there own studios. I think that in the long run MS would have found this a better investment than minecraft, I think gamers would have.  Sure MS can buy minecraft, it's money found down the back of the sofa for them, but it's still a waste of $2.5billion imo.

I honestly feel its just Nadela trying to show off, since its his first acquistion as CEO. Which is weird considering he said Xbox wasn't core. I also doubt they have plans for gaming outside of Xbox, but

I literally just bought Minecraft PS4 just incase they pulled it when the deal is announced

Im really curious to see where they take the IP in the future.

I wonder how many people did that. Ironically, this could increase sales of the PlayStation versions.

Its also a very self-defeating hope.

Sony's consoles are enormously better than they otherwise might have been due to the fantastic innovation's Microsoft has brought to the table. Most of that advancement would cease a day after Microsoft announced a withdrawal from the console market.

I doubt it would be quite that dramatic :p MS is Sony's biggest competitor, but they do also have Nintendo and PC gaming to consider. In the short term i can't see them going back on their current set up, especially when it's working so well for them.

In the long run though, yeah, if either MS or Sony were to leave the industry the other would likely get progressively worse. Heck, they're both still here and they still still pull shit every so often (MS more recently than Sony, but we all remember Sony 2005 - 2007. Fun times ¬¬).

Why? They are buying it to help their mobile division, not Xbox.

Because it doesn't matter what division they are buying it for, it is a massive waste of money.  This money could be used to buy Capcom and pump out Monster Hunter, RE, and Deepdown on Xbox AND mobile if they wanted to.  Instead they are throwing money in a fire pit that will likely not see a return for a decade, and if it takes a decade to make a profit off of this much money, did they really profit?
