Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft to announce Mojang (Minecraft) buyout on Monday, for $2.5b

Xenostar said:
Bet they dont spend 2.5B on 25 AAA First party games next year, Seems like a massive waste. But i hope it works out for them.

MS is already investing in AAA games and many are coming from 3rd parties.

I guarantee MS didn't buy a company for $2 billion just to make Xbox games. They must have plans bigger than that and Mincraft is going to stay on other platforms.

I don't see many people buying a windows phone or surface tablet just for minecraft.

$2.5 billion?!

For perspective, Atlus--a developer which has three times Mojang's employee count and a long history of quality products--sold for $130 million. Mojang has one IP and most of the talent which made that work will cash-out now.

That said, I'm sure the Playstation version of Minecraft will be unaffected by this, just like the iOS version won't be affected. It would be stupid to cut a revenue stream off as potent as Minecraft. Any deal will affect future Mojang IP and give X1 owners priority on updates, but this is basically for Minecraft 2 or whatever other products Mojang has in mind for the future.

The question is if Mojang can make a second fantastic product when most of the talent has left and the rest is under corporate scrutiny. I think not.

A few things

What does this mean for all the Playstation versions of Minecraft, will it still be supported with updates?

Couldn't $2.5 billion be better spent on oh I dunno actually making some good new IPs? Think of how many games could of been made with $2.5 billion

Is Mojang secretely making another game?

If this is all for Minecraft it seems like a waste of money, how are they going to profit from this, everything will likely have a cost now.

Microsoft can still spend $2.5 billion on new games. Some time ago they already said they're spending a billion on X1 exclusives. Also, there isn't always a guarantee a new IP will be good even from an established studio. Have you heard about Destiny?

I would assume Mojang had plans for future projects, maybe even a sequel or big updates to Minecraft.

This purchase is so huge that there must be plans we aren't aware of.

I knew it was mainly for Windows phone. I still expect them to release future Minecraft games on all platforms but make the X1 and Windows phone version the best.

Sure what's an extra $500 million when your dropping 2 billion?

The is the single most overpriced buyout in video game history.

Do you, or anyone else, think that Minecraft actually sells systems?

To me, it seems the other way around.

It's not: "OMG, Minecraft is coming out on PS4/XOne/Vita/Tablet/Toaster, gotta buy the console!!!"

But: "Hey, I already got a PS4/XOne/Vita/Tablet/Toaster, now that Minecraft is out, I'll get the game!"

Exactly.

Minecraft is not going to do any significant boosts whatsoever. MS must think they can get an exclusive franchise out of it. But I reckon it will die off after the second iteration.

Also...Mojang does not equal Minecraft, I don't know why people keep making this silly error. Its easy enough for them to sell off the IP before acquistion, and its even more likely that the original Minecraft will stay multiplat besides this, though MS might make updates an exclusive or exclusive DLC, but we'll see...

Othewise this seems like the typical cycle of MS Xbox this gen, invest in already critical acclaimed series/hyped series, it performs average to undwhelming, investors get pissed, spend even more money on less of a risk, rinse repeat

It's that big financial flop from Activision. I heard it only sold like 6 copies.
