Forums - Nintendo - Predict the Metas for Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad, and Smash 3DS/Wii U

Yeah, if Nintendo doesn't win most GOTY awards this year then I call total bias in the gaming press. As other have said, Dragon Age is about the only thing left with any chance at being as good as something like Bayo 2 or SSB.

But you have to acknowledge genre bias over any other kind though. I doubt a racing, fighting or Party game will win GOTY in the forseeable future. I think even platformers will only be considered if they belong a big franchise like Mario.

Crazy how high a lot of you people think HW will score, do you seriously believe that the Zelda bonus is going to take the game to the high 70s or even 80s?

Having played the demo and being able to compare it to Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper, it has definite improvements from the get-go that make it more fun to play (namely the lock-on system, better dodging/movement mechanics, Focus Spirit, and a better visual style). I'm also reading/watching press previews/discussions, and it seems the general opinion so far is that it is enjoyable because they really nail the Zelda fanservice. I don't think that will take it into the 80's but I'm expecting mid to high 70's.

What I'm more impressed by is the number of people thinking Smash 3DS will score in the 90's simply because the 3DS isn't even close to ideal for playing Smash.

I think the novelty of having that game on a handheld will compensate for lack of local multiplayer and lack of a C stick. its also the first foray back into the franchise for 6 years.

Hyrule Warriors: 85
Bayonetta 2: 90
Captain Toad: 87
SSB 3DS: 89
SSB WiiU: 94

Playing: F1 2016 (PC), Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PS4)
Watching: Hajime no Ippo, Attack on Titan (4th time)
Upcoming purchases in October:
-TBD

Hyrule Warriors : 79
Bayonetta 2 : 92
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker : 83
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U : 93
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS : 88
Pokémon AlphaSapphire/OmegaRuby : 87

Hyrule Warriors: 75 (I think the Zelda brand will count for/against it depending on the reviewer, and I've heard reports of slowdown that won't go down well in some quarters)

Bayonetta 2: 91 (I'd love this to score more highly but I can see it being slightly divisive)

Captain Toad: 87 (Given the pedigree of EAD Tokyo I'm expecting great things, but there's a lot we don't know about this game compared to everything else)

SSBfor3DS: 87 (I think this could be one of the best games on 3DS, but handheld titles generally are reviewed lower than home console titles. Some of the best 3DS games (imo), have lower scores than a home console title of equivalent quality: Luigi's Mansion 2, Kid Icarus, Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem: Awakening come to mind)

SSBforWii U: 93 (I think it'll do better than Kart 8, but there'll be a handful of 7s that will drag the score down; I expect we'll get reviewers complaining that the franchise is stagnant, which is an accusation levelled at every major Nintendo release from at least one or two reviewers)

Honestly, I think all of OP's predictions are pretty accurate, for precisely the reasons named. But I'll bump them all up/down by a point, just so I'm not copying things exactly:

Hyrule Warriors: 83 (yeah, Dynasty Warriors games aren't exactly critical gems outside of Japan... this one looks like it's got a bit more going on than usual, though)

Bayonetta 2: 93

Captain Toad: 91 (EAD Tokyo is an insanely talented group of developers, I have very high hopes for this)

SSBfor3DS: 89

SSBforWii U: 94

I'll be very surprised if the Wii U doesn't have at least 2-3 more 90+ games under its belt by the end of the year.

I don't give a damn how any of them score on metacritic, I learned years ago not to base my purchases on critical reception.
