Rare was purchased for a fraction of this had some success under MS.
This is something a lot bigger and riskier.

Another one, this gets more ridiculous by the minute. 
kinda glad i just updated the xbo version from my x360 version. at least i know updates will continue on xbo, i dont know about the future of minecraft on sony platforms.
the way it has still been selling is crazy. might be a good move by MS to bring more to buy an xbo.

Two ways I view this.
Business - The two billion is a lot, but to me the surprising part is how risky this is. Depending on how Mine craft is managed it could go down as a crazy fad that lasted 7-8 years. Microsoft clearly have hopes and plans to keep this IP valuable longer than I see.
Personal - To me this epitomizes Microsoft in relation to games. Ask what is the biggest thing right now and move inbig on it. As a gamer this move means nothing to me as does nothing to expand or diversify Xbox.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
MS probably views Minecraft as their own Mario or Pokemon-like franchise. Something they can cash in on in various iterartions, forever. Also, with its popularity on PC and other platforms, it's also an interesting hedge against the future of Xbox in a way.
In reality, this is probably more like Wii Sports. Massive popularity and sales for a handful of years, then nothing.
