Cash grab.

I have to agree, because of the way the new hardware is built. Such a shame that there are people defending this move because it has happened before with the GBC. More shame to the people defending it if it has happened before. I really REALLY don't want Sony and Microsoft to begin doing this too, as this would make buying a console early on a bad move.

I hate that Sony actually released a revision that's worse than the initial piece of hardware, instead of a real upgrade. When I get a Vita (I still want to play the Uncharted for it), I'm going to have to search high and low for a launch Vita !

And what's the relevance to the topic here? Also no one is talking about the hardware upgrades or downgrades, we're talking about forcing people to buy the new hardware if they want the newer games.

Wat newer games?  1 Wii Port + ??? 3DS is still getting supported friend, Nintendo aint forcing nobody to buy this, especially with 3DS getting support still.

I mean Look at GBA ⇒ DS for example, that was a gen transition in under 4 years while N3DS comes out exactly 4 years after the original came out.

I think the reason is quite obvious... it's to revitalize 3ds sales.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

Thats an obvious reason though... Every company does it with HW.

Exactly... The OP's question was why the N3DS was created and that's probably the sole reason: to make current 3DS owners double dip to revitalize 3ds sales.

If you think that's the only reason then you're wrong.

If you think that's the only reason then you're wrong.

The only other reason I could see being plausible would be the 3d patent. The Amiibo integration is an improvement to make current owners double dip on the system and the brand recognition reason is absolutely false. 3DS is not even close to being a "hot product" or a very popular product. It's doing sub 100k months in the US and Europe which is a far cry compared to previous Nintendo handhelds.

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

All valid arguments

But this really isn't too different than when they released the DSi. It had more processing power, added PSRAM, expandable SD slot, a camera and added connectivity with the DSi shop.

To extend the life of the 3DS: I think their next gen handheld is a way off, probably likely to drop the same time as their next gen console. This move is to buy time till then IMO.

Too add amiibo support: Amiibos are a big part of Nintendos plans I think, having the capability to read them is key.

To fix things that the original 3DS should have had like a second analouge stick.

For easy console ports by having the same buttons as a console.

To increase power so that vita ports are more likely to happen

I wonder how much more powerful the CPU is.

2 made me laugh. 3DS is like Nintendo's least successful handheld. It will be lucky to pass the GBA at this rate.
I wouldnt exactly say the 3DS name is strong (especially when it tried to piggyback off of the DS in the first place)

Really? I thought it was selling similar to the DS since i've been seeing it at 1st and 2nd place most of the time. I don't know too much about the history of Nintendo portables, could you explain a bit more? also, how many units do you think it will sell lifetime at this rate?
