Forums - Sony Discussion - The Order 1886 "stumbles where it counts"

Naughty Dog's first AAA game wasn't Uncharted quality, either (just a pointer). In fact, I doubt any dev's first AAA is of Uncharted quality, but this preview hasn't made even a slight dent on my radar. Everything I've seen from this game screams: "purchase", so the more people post these negative previews, the more I brush it off (btw, there are also plenty of positive previews, but I've yet to see many posted here on the site, ironically).

After all, I remember how much pre-bashing Heavy Rain got, from both journalists and gamers. Sometimes these things don't turn out so cut and dry (and the game has another 5 months of dev time, anyway).

Retro. Metroid Prime.

Its rare but it happens. It also happens that a dev can start mediocre and turn to completely shit in short order.

Metroid is a known franchise (and Retro had plenty of in-house help to keep to the tradition). Not exactly apples-to-apples.

The IP was, sure, but the game was nothing like its predecessors. But I get your point.

Either way, I don't like giving devs arbitrary "they'll do better", we can't really say. We will have to wait and see if the pre-release opinions will match the released product of the Order. If they do... I won't expect much else from these devs with any sort of "hype".

i will probably just either wait for the reviews or a for a 30 dollar price price drop cause this looks like a last gen shooter with a current gen coat of pain

Give you glimpses of the other side. Make of it what you will, but I wouldn't take some negative previews as the final word:

Just a few of the previews that paint a very different picture (again, not posted on the site while I've seen plenty of negatives for it). Not saying that the game will be great based on positive previews, but the same is certainlin in "Order" on the flip-side.

This ^^

This is just one reviewer with a negative perpective.

i wil be waiting for the game to come out and get a true review.

Yep, and here's another preview that actually... you know, previews the game.

Interesting quote: "During the demo we were shown alternative outcomes to those set pieces we saw during the press conference - the idea being to show us it's not really quick time events, but actually something a bit more dynamic and quite frankly, very appetising."

Ooooh Marty Sliva. I like him on IGN's podcasts but I can't stand his reviews and previews.

This is the guy who legit wrote an article complaining about Nintendo's Splatoon not being a mascot platformer. I'm dead serious .

Nintendo was giving one of their well known franchises to a western dev that never made a game. Though Nitnendos involment di d play a big role in the development process, what Retro was doing was not something easy. Trying to transistion a game from 2D to 3D while still trying to keep most of the major elements can end horribly. Especially if you are going from 2D side scroller to FPS.

I feel that this writer is complaining more about the lack of new content from The Order rather than the game itself. The PAX demo is the same demo from Gamescom and many gamers were safisfied with how it played out. So, now it begs the question, what has this guy been doing over the past 3 weeks?

Not only that, he has very little understanding as to how the thermite gun works. Here's his comment on the gun:

"The problem here was that the bullets spread out in such a wide area so quickly, that I could burst-fire an entire clip at an enemy across a street and have every single bullet miss its target."

The goal with the thermite gun is NOT to hit your enemies with the thermite bullets. The point of spreading them out is so you can have a larger blast range to deal damage to more enemies at once.

It brings to mind ZombiU, a game that I still want to play, which got a lot of flak for doing gameplay its own way. People get used to being gods and tend toward a, "this gun won't work, this game is stupid," mentality.

Most people that bought ZombiU knew that the gameplay was going to be limited due to it's survival horrorness, it got flack for having the same difficulty throughout the game, never gradually upping up the difficulty or challenging the player. After playing for and hour or so, the player has pretty much played everything the game has to offer. Multiplayer was cool, asymmetrical gameplay like evolve

With thanks to the OP for choosing to bring us a negative review, I guess I'll just choose to accept more positive ones.

I have made up my mind to buy the game a long time ago anyway.
