Eh, I feel like this is pretty premature. Sony got rid of a lot of stuff in 2014... 20 or so stores, the tv division, laptop division, stake in Squeenix, and SOE. I mean, if they can continue to do this year after year, yeah it will be a sustainable plan, but they can only sell or spin off so many things

They needed to sell all of that stuff. Have you been to a Sony store? It's empty as all hell. Compare that to the Apple or even MS store...Laptops, needed to get rid of it. Squeenix, well, unless they could buy a majority share and control where Squeenix games would go, they needed to unload it as it wasn't doing them any good. SOE has always been more of a PC dev, so cutting the fat. With that said, you are right, it's a long road ahead and Sony needs to prove they are financially viable without selling assets.

1. I don't think you are getting my point. Massive sales of departments can do a lot to turn a short term profit. It just isn't a viable long term strategy.  Yeah, they made a quick buck this year, but what about next year? They can't sell the laptop section off again. Even with these sales their net income was still over a loss of 100B yen.

2. One of Sony's core businesses is as a security trader... It's basically their job to buy and hold stock.

Pfft. You wrote like 5 sentences. You can't expect me to be able to read all of them =P

Sony can be described as a conglomerate with too many anchors holding the ship back, and not enough engines driving the company forward.

They have been dropping a lot of their loss leading divisions like their Vaio PC division, their Ericsson mobile division, their HDTV division, etc. and dumping non beneficial assets/liabilities, but it's very hard for a company of Sony's size to adjust fire rapidly as we've seen since 2008.

It seems unlikely that Sony can rebuild its image off the back of essentially one device, but it appears that they have been more or less been doing just that with the PS4.

Naturally, Sony has always had its media/entertainment divisions as well as their lesser known financial services, but the main success story has been the PS4, which Sony has been wise to build off of with all the related services tied to the console.

It's still too early to say really, but it is pretty safe to say that SCE will continue to do well moving forward, whether as a separate division (I don't see this happening as the Playstation brand is a halo brand for Sony) or as the most visible, profitable division driving growth (or reducing overall losses) for Sony.

no one buys Apple computers anymore, 80% of apples revenue comes from iphones, yet its considered a sucess, Why the contrast aprouching sony differently?

Eh, Macs have been at around 8% of the market for at least ten years. And they held that marketshare in 2014. Plenty of people are buying macs.

I never saw a mac in someones basement in my life time, maybe in 8% in usa but not in the rest of the world

The 8% is worldwide. That isn't to say that it isn't mostly focused in the US. But for as long as I have been paying attention to it. Since at least when I made my original vgc account they have been around that mark. Maybe even a bit less

He stopped the bleeding by cutting the limbs off.

This is pretty much the answer. I mean he had to do it, but its not like its the return of the glory days.
