Forums - Gaming - Tablets are lightyears behind consoles.

Even if the tablets get substantially more powerful (they will), the control interface and game quality standards will still be abysmal.

It's why Japan, the most mobile-centric market on earth, still sells a metric crapton of 3DS and even Vita units.

No dev really wants to spend the money making a truly amazing title on a phone/tablet, because they don't feel they can get $40-$60 for it. Phone/Tablet casuals want free games, .99 cent games, and maaaaaybe a handful of $4.99 games. But $40+? Forget it.

Tech is a moving target anyway, but everything is slowing down thanks to new nodes being more and more difficult. By the time 10nm is here (roughly what would be necessary for an iPad to fully match PS360 horsepower in a sub 5-watt envelope), we'll be looking at 9th gen consoles and a new gen of handhelds, and that will move the target that much further down the line.

It's not a fair comparison anyway, as a console can easily use 50-150 or even more watts, whereas tablets and especially phones are limited to a tiny fraction of that, meaning they have to cut massively down on CPU/GPU. That's not even touching (lol) the storage and memory limitations that also come. Fast memory and especially GDDR5 and beyond make some decent heat.

Not to mention playing Bioshock on an iphone would be god damn awful due to the controls.

Phone manufacturers claim there phones are powerful but the power is rarely used.

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

You just don't want that they close the gap, first of all 5-6 years ago people had problems with running games like Final Fantasy or Chrono trigger and those were NES/SNES games, today you have games that almost reach last gen quality and I would consider that closing gap. I also want to remind you it is not just the new phones/tablets that it works on, it even works on the Iphone 5 and that thing is around 2 years old.. Iphone 6 probably will get announced in less than two weeks and it could potentially play last gen games quality wise...

I suggest u dont look at it like this! when iphone came to be in 2007 it could run games that looked as good as PS2 games, now after 7 years and on iphone 6 we may see games that look like some of last gen games, theorical performance of the PS2 was 6GFLOPS and PS3 was around 400GFLOPS, that's just 394GFLOPS gain in 7 years if we compare this to iphones!

So lets say in 7 years iphone 12! will have a theorical performance of not even 800GFLOPS but 1TERAFLOPS! (200 extra here cause of advancments in tech!) its still behind the PS4 by 1 freakin TF(CPU+GPU) and until then if Sony make another console we gonna see PS5 with at least triple the PS4's power.

Add me if u want :)

I wouldn't say they're light years behind consoles, but considering the small screen sizes, they're good enough. Tablets will of course always be limited by their size and low power draw (unless someone finds a way to break/bend the laws of physics), but when you play games on tablets they often don't need as much power as a console to still look very impressive. Some of the games I've played on my Galaxy S4 look incredible for such a small device.

The other thing to remember is that Flops aren't everything. As chip architectures improve, devs will be able to use more advanced techniques whilst using significantly less power.

Exactly.  I really hope Sony conties the Xperia Play line.  That was the only time I ever used my phone for games.

THANK YOU!!!   FLOPS are FAR from everything.  Nvidia GPU's are notoriously weaker in the computational department compared to their AMD counterparts, and yet they are not half as strong like the numbers would suggest.  They are simply built to game.

The article must be trolling, this is PSP level, not even close to PS360.

OH LORD WERT IS DAT!? o.o Why are they ruining one of my favourite games?

Golden Abyss looks miles better and still isn't even at PS3/360 level

You really gotta wonder if they even watched the video.  It looks like something on a 3DS.
