Why is a thread asking about how the Retron systems are, talking about PC emulators?

It's a genuinely interesting topic, and people with actual Retron experience should definitely speak up, as I'd also like to know some personal experiences with how these things are, quality-wise.

They're not technically illegal as long as you also buy the physical games. If you own the physical copy, and then just download the same ROM for your emulator then as far as I know it's not illegal.

Example: If I download the GBA emulator for Iphone, and download Pokemon for it, then it would be illegal, as I don't own the game for the original GBA, but if I own the game on GBA, and then download it for the emulator then it would be allowed.

I believe you have to dump the ROM from your own copy for it to be legal, and it depends which country you are in, I think illegal in US.  Legal in UK, EU is a mix but I think mostly legal.

Yeah, you're right. But I noticed the OP is from the US so it doesn't help him -_-

This is not true in any way. If you have a piece of software on a format you are not allowed to remove that software from the device as such downloading illegal roms just because you own a cart is still not allowed by law.

Also if you are talking about buying some 3rd party rom machine console from the net that isn't licenced then you are just buying roms and an emulator in a box.

Emulators themselves are not illegal. I know that for 100% fact. So if I purchase a Hyperkin, and then play actual cartridges purchased by me on the Hyperkin, it most definitely isn't illegal.

I'm just wondering if people think it is worth it, or if I should may look for downloadable titles instead for the classic era, or if I should just purchase the consoles, and deal with them being less reliable.

The emulator itself would not be illegal if not for the fact that they all require bios files from the original systems which belong to Nintendo/Sega/Sony which are all illegal to reverse engineer to then use as the core of an emulator program, I'm sorry but if you are using files from a console protected by law in something else you are breaking the law in most countries anyway.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't actively gone after Hyperkin then, considering they have been around for quite a while, and are even sold at some retailers.

Well, somebody tried telling me that I should just use PC emulators.

Regardless, I would really like to hear input from somebody who has actually used a Retron system before. I don't expect it to be the most amazing thing in the world. The idea is that I can get about 5 different systems that I would want to use for only $140, and have it all in one.

Sorry for thread derailing :/

I hear there are issues with the Retron 5. It has emulation issues I hear.

No worries, I didn't really make clear I wasn't too interested in computer emulation :)

I have had 2 retron 3s. The one worked for 2 years before the SNES section went bad. I just got my second a few months ago and it works fine except the power button is a lil sticky. (Not terrible for $60)

The only issue i've had with the 3s (This has been solved with the 5s because the 5 uses a HDMI output) is resolution mismatches on LCD TVs. The 3 outputs the native resolutions of the older systems (Sub 480i) while the 5 has a hardware upscaler. I got around the issue by using an RF modulator box and transformed the raw RCA Video into Analog NTSC RF.

The only games you may have issue with are SNES and Genesis games that use things like the Super FX chip. Everything else runs fine on my 3 with original controllers.

Oh I understand that. It's just that a friend of mine and I have been thinking seriously about getting either Retron 4 or 5 lately. I'm very interested to hear more gamer experiences with it. The controller looks like garbage for 5, but the one for 4 looks fine, except 4 seems to be impossible to find for some reason. Retro 3 also looks fine, except that it only plays NES, SNES and Genesis. 5 obviously looks like the best, as it plays 9 "different" systems (NES, Famicom, SNES, Super Famicom, Genesis, Game Boy, GBC, GBA, Mega Drive). But there's the controller it comes with (you can plug in real system controllers).

I'm just curious if it's worth the trouble or not. Have an old NES, SNES, and Genesis and TG16, but the last two are missing the power chords or RF Switch, and while the NES is fine, the SNES seems to be on the fritz a bit. It would be nice to have something to continue playing them on, and it would be a nifty bonus to be able to play old GB system games on tv too.
