Forums - Movies & TV - Bad Theater Experiences, Is This Common?

Well, i did have an unfortunate experience about a month ago. Went to a movie and it was kind of packed so we had to get seats towards the front in the middle. We go sit down and this big (and i mean big, well over 300lbs, probably pushing 400) guy comes into the theatre, sees us in the middle of the aisle and just sits on the side of the row.

Well, a few minutes later a family comes in and tells him he is sitting in their seats (assigned seating). He apologises and comes down the row and plops himself right next to me. The guys fat rolled over the arm rest. He was seriously taking up half the space of my seat with his excess fat. His legs couldnt fit in fromt of him either, and he didnt seem to have any qualms pushing my legs into my space, pushing my legs into my brother. Definitely one of those people that NEEDED to buy two tickets...

And he stank SO BAD! It is like he hadnt showered in a month. Or wiped himself... It was like a strong combination of BO and poop... He also had two slurpees with him, that when they would get low he would sit and slurp on the straw for like 10 minutes making the most obnoxious sounds. After about a half hour, I got up and went and sat in the handicap chair for the rest of the movie...

Brad Jones is a interesting person.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I like his reviews cause they are reactions right after seeing a movie.

Then I go to Moviebob for some-what collected thoughts.

You are a wise man. Althought your user name say otherwise.

All too common, in my experience.

Going to the movies is a total crap shoot. You're just as likely to get a knowledgeable, respectful audience as you are to get a collection of screaming, unsupervised children, obnoxious adults having loud, personal conversations, and a thousand points of cell phone screen light popping up at irregular intervals during the screening.

I love the energy and shared cultural experience that only a crowded movie theater can offer, but I know every time I step through those doors I'm rolling the dice.

I was recently watching Brad Jones's Current Movie Reviews, a part of That Guy With Glasses website, of TMNT:

 http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/bj/bcmr/44327-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles

The start of his review was a big rant on his awful theater experience:

-Watched in 3D (for review purposes, to state weither its worth it or not) but turns out they accidently showed it in 2D instead.

-40 mins in they pause the movie and state they are sorry for the inconvience and restart the movie in 3D.

-Walks out to movie hop to the 2D version to meet up with some friends.

-Both theatres had screaming kids that were too young to bring to a theater.

-One loud kid to his side was telegraphing everything he was seeing to his parent and the parent did nothing to stop him.

And made me think, I've never had a bad experience at a theater, and I usually see at least 5 movies in theater a year.

At worst maybe someone on thier phone but each time they either answer it quickly or go outside.

Have you'll had a bunch of bad experiences and is this quite common?

If you live near an Alamo Drafthouse theater, please do go there for now on. They have a very serious zero tolerance policy towards anyone talking or using a phone during a movie. You WILL be forcefully ejected from the theater if you are caught and I think this has a lot to do with the fact that they still employ "ushers" in each theater to keep an eye on the crowd. People will generally tone it down if they know they are being watched by staff.

Try to do at least ONE good deed everyday....

My local theater sucks even without anyone there. I rather watch at home.

You have these now http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/movies/2014/08/15/cineplex_vip_cinemas_don_mills_canadas_first_adultsonly_multiplex_opens_friday.html
Must be 19 years or older to enter, still won't guarantee much, especially with alcohol being served there. And it will cost you $20 to $30 per movie.

When I still used to go to the cinema I preferred to wait a bit and go when the rush has past. Unless it's the rocky horror picture show, I don't care about the audience.

It is quite expensive. I'd only buy a ticket there for a movie worth watching. Wow $12 for a ticket plus the overpriced food. I gotta be grateful that adult tickets over here still cost $6.75.

Ever since i bought a nice tv and surround sound(4 years ago) I've all but stopped going to theaters. So much cheaper and less of a headache to rent a movie. I've seen 5 movies this year(only because of dates) and 4 of them were horrible experiences, talking kids, immature 'adults', house lights being left on, and one was delayed 20 minutes at the last minute without a reason given.

Children are what often ruin the theaters for me. They either have to talk through the entire thing or repeat to their friends/parents every single thing that happens. I want to strangle them, and their parents.

Yes, once. it was on a high school trip to watch "Love and Basketball"

someone got pissed off and threw a large cup of soda at some people. I think it was because they were talking too much. It was most likely the girls from my school I think.
